Jayden 1: Abridged Worlds (Part 1)
Abridged Worlds Part 1 of 2
By Crazy Minh
I sat up and groaned as I tried to blink through the fuzzy spots in my vision. I looked around at the field of grass, a tall wire fence visible nearby. It was night, and the chilly air suggested that the season was winter. These details informed me that I was definitely NOT where I was meant to be. I was pretty sure that the founding ceremony of the United Federation of Planets was not in a empty field with a wire fence. I stood up, and got a better view of the area. The field was not as large as I had initially thought. It was more like a garden, with Japanese rock pools and a large artificial lake. A couple of meters away, a road snaked it’s way up to a large, gothic building with very modern renovations added to the Victorian frame. Over the doorway, a stone sign read ‘Arkam Asylum’. I nearly laughed, until I remembered reading the batman comics I had picked up earlier from a 22nd century comic vendor. I began to back up, as I realised a alarm was blaring inside. I realised with a sinking feeling that I was probably the cause. A split second later, a group of armed men in combat gear surrounded me, aiming automatic weapons at me from all sides. My hand reached towards my holstered revolver, but I refrained from drawing the weapon.
“Hands in the air!!!”
I raised my hands, and the men disarmed me, and cuffed my hands behind my back. Although I probably could of escaped the bonds (having learned escape skills from a alternate version of Harry Houdini), I choose to simply be led along. This could turn out to be fun!
Three hours later, I was regretting not attempting escape. They had thrown me in a metal-lined cell with what I assumed as a two-way mirror on one wall. They had cuffed me to the chair, and I was currently twiddling my thumbs in agonising boredom. I considered bringing out my smartphone, and watching some reruns of some old shows, but I refrained due to the fact I knew I was being watched. I sat for another two minutes, before deciding to go get some answers. I unlocked the cuffs that I had jammed a small toothpick into (luckily they weren’t too complicated, and were actually quite antiquated) and concentrated on remembering the corridor outside. I then opened up a portal, and leaped through.
I should probably mention at this point that I’m a mutant of some kind. I have the ability to create portals over short distances, connecting two points in space. Additionally, I can perform dimensional jumps to other universes and therefore other time periods in those universes. Before I ended up in the small metal cell, I was on my way to a dimension simular to that of the Star Trek TV Franchise’s Milky Way, to attend the signing of the document that created the iconic United Federation of Planets that Star Trek is set in. Before that, I had spent the five years since I accidentally left my home dimension going to whatever universe I could find that had a corresponding work of fiction in my boring, everyday universe. I found plenty, including a dimension that was exactly like the TV show Doctor Who. Anyway, I also discovered I had a immense talent for creating gadgets and equipment from technology from around the multiverse. As a result, I was now on my way to fetch my Bag of Holding from a Dungeons and Dragons universe that I had made by asking a level-20 wizard to enchant a everyday backpack with the same enchantment. In return, I gave him a MP3 I had in my backpack, one which I had modified to generate power off the heat of your hands. He seemed to be enjoying the musical talents of the Beasty Boys when I left through one of my portals. But, that is a story for another time. Right now, I had to find my stuff, then escape (and hopefully find out where I was).
I turned the corner, and bumped straight into a tall, bearded man of indeterminate age. He was wearing a lab coat with a badge on it. Before I could react, he grabbed me, and pinned me to the floor.
“Who are you, and why are you here?”
“Let go of me goddamit!!”
“First, you tell me what you’re doing in a top secret facility, and how you got onto our grounds unnoticed. We ran your face while you were in that cell, and you don’t seem to exist anywhere. So, who are you? A Shifter of some kind??”
I grunted, and opened a portal beneath us. We reappeared outside. I realised it was now dawn. The portal closed, and the man rolled off and clambered to his feet.
“Ah. A warper. So why are you here?”
I sat up, and glared at him.
“If you and your special ops cronies don’t lock me up again, I’ll have a nice little chat with you and your buddies. Maybe you can tell me what the hell is this place, and where the hell is it. If you can do that, I’ll cooperate. But right now, I’m kinda late for a ceremony I’ve wanted to see for a long time.
“So you got lost then?”
“Obviously,” I said through gritted teeth. “Now, you’re turn Dr. Strangelove.”
He chortled a bit, and offered me his hand. I grasped it, and clambered to my feet.
“Welcome to the Arkam Research Consolidation headquarters, located in New Hampshire, Boston. My name is Doctor Otto, I’m a member of the research team. You are??”
“Jayden. Jayden Reynolds.”
“Nice to meet you,” said Dr. Otto (I tried not to think of a certain Marvel villain with eight limbs). “Now, let’s go discuss this somewhere else. I think security is about to throw a little temper tantrum.”
A few minutes later, I was sitting in a conference room with Dr. Otto, a man wearing a black security uniform, and another scientist in a labcoat. I had showed them my abilities, and had discovered that I was now unable to travel to another dimension. Dr. Otto said that we were waiting for someone else, and that I should probably give them the full rundown once that person arrived.
A full minute after I had explained my situation, a girl wearing a school uniform walked in. She looked very gothlike, and I began to wonder if I was hallucinating. No person wore that much makeup in public without experiencing massive skin breathability problems. She looked at me and smiled, showing slightly pointed incisors. I blinked, and looked back at the rest of the group. The girl sat down a few seat down, and pulled up a chair.
“Well, now that everyone’s here, let’s get started!” exclaimed Doctor Otto. “Jayden, can I introduce Sara Waite, my personal assistant?”
“A pleasure,” said Sara, and extended her hand. I extended mine, and decided to have a little fun. I mentally dropped the holographic projection around my right arm.
“Holy Shit!!!” exclaimed the security man. “Your arm is robotic??”
I looked at him, and frowned.
“Why do you sound so surprised when you work in a mutant research facility? You should be seeing stranger things than that!!! Like small girls who can flip trucks with their mind!!!”
“it’s just that…sorry, I’m not used to seeing someone’s perfectly normal arm turn into a considerably bulkier and more angular prosthetic.”
“No one’s blaming you officer,” said Doctor otto, looking slightly interested. “I’m confused as to how I didn’t notice the forearm I was clutching earlier was a different size and shape to the one I perceived.”
“It’s a Multiphasic Trideflecting perception filter built into the arm,” I said with some relish. I loved saying technobabble, especially when I knew that no one would understand it.
“Oh!” said the other scientist. “So it phases the protruding bits from reality while projecting a three-dimensional holographic disguise over the other visible parts while altering people’s perception so that they don’t pay attention to any flickers or glitches with the effect.”
I looked at him, an gave a slow clap.
“Bravo. Bravo. I really didn’t expect anyone to understand that. What’s your name again???”
He looked flummoxed. “My name is Rasputin. I’m a member of the Whateley Academy Advanced Technologies Program.”
I nodded, and then turned back to the others.
“Why is a teacher here? As a matter of fact, why is a schoolgirl here, regardless of whether she’s your ‘personal Assistant’ or not.”
Dr Otto looked at me, and smiled. I felt like I was missing something.
“We can’t exactly educate a 16 year old mutant at ARC. Sara is here to provide you with a friendly face at Whateley. You know, someone who can help you if you need it?”
I grimaced. “Ouch. Five years without school and I’m sent back.”
Dr otto looked perplexed. “You manifested when you were 11??”
I shook my head. “No. I don’t appear to have aged in the last five years. I’m still 16 apparently. Is there any alternative to going to this school?”
Dr otto shook his head. “You’ll have to go if you’re to establish a foothold of sorts in this dimension. That will also provide you with a place to stay and something to do while you figure out how to get back your abilities. Now, Rasputin here has some documents for you to sign. You don’t need to worry about the ‘Guardian’ bit or the ‘Social Security Number’ section…”
A few days later, I was standing outside the administration building of Whateley Academy. In my hand was my backpack, and my revolver was inside my backpack. I stared up at the ivy covered building, took a deep breath, and walked inside. After spending a few minutes figuring out where the office area was, I walked inside and approached the receptionist.
“Hi, can I help you?” asked the woman behind the desk cheerfully.
“Uh, yeah,” I said. “I’m Jayden Reynolds, I’m told I can pick up my class assignments from here as well as my dorm allocation?”
She looked down at her screen, and tapped a few keys on her keyboard.
“Ah yes. I’ll just fetch your files from the drawer and we’ll be good to go!”
She spun her chair round and opened a filing cabinet. After leafing through the files, she pulled out a small plastic sleeve, checked out some details on the front, and handed the sleeve to me.
“Right!!! You’ve been assigned to Melville cottage. Just follow the signage, and you’ll be there. It’s the weekend, so classes are off until Monday. Have a nice day mister Reynolds!!”
I walked off, heading towards my new school, and the beginning of my new life in another dimension.
Author Note: OK!!! I know a author note is a carry-over of mine from my writing on Fanfiction.net, but here is a quick ‘after-action’ rundown on what this is. This WhatIF was adapted from my proposed character for Team Kimba that got shot down. Jayden is not exactly the same as the proposed character, as he is a straight fully-male individual with slightly less powerful characteristics. For my WoG on the character’s powers, he is currently unrated, but will probably be Warper-3 with additional Gadgeteer-5. I know 5 is ultra-powerful, but Gadgeteering is not that harmful or dangerous a power, unless you factor in the devices the character creates. The warper bit is because if he was using purely technology, it would be harder to create a situation where he would become stuck in the Whateleyverse, unable to leave and go to other dimensions. I know that the WA universe has a bad history with dimension-hopping characters, but this situation is unique in that the character can travel through the multiverse, but is relegated to the WA universe due to a unknown external effect. This allows me to give Jayden a few…toys from other dimensions. Expect to see a phaser or two somewhere in future stories. I’ll release the next part of this story sometime within the next two-three weeks. That’s all for now!!!
