Abridged Worlds (Part 2)
Abridged Worlds Part 2 of 2
By Crazy Mihn
Whateley Academy; Saturday 6th January 2007
I walked up to the 8 story building that would be my home for my time at Whateley. Melville appeared to be more modern than the smaller dorms I had passed on the way here. It was a glass and steel construction, with a lobby area on the ground floor. I walked inside, and noticed that the building had a concierge.
“Hi, can I help you?” asked the woman behind the desk. She was of oriental descent, and had a nametag reading ‘Mrs Deng - Melville Concierge’. Her desk was immaculate, except for a small pile of envelopes and packages stacked behind her desk.
“Hi, my name is Jayden Reynolds, I’ve been assigned to this cottage as a freshman?”
She glanced down at a open book, turned to a page with a table featuring a series of room numbers and names. She then pulled out a clipboard, and ticked off my name. She then gave a long drawling monologue in a vaguely amused tone.
“Freshmen rooms are on the third floor. Go to the lift, and press the third floor button. I’ve been told to give you this package with your student ID, the school rulebook, and a list of the classes we’ve been told to put you in. Your room number is 314. You’ve been assigned another newbie as a roommate. They haven’t arrived yet. Have a nice day.”
With that, she handed me the said package, pointed out the lift, and picked up a copy of The Dark Tower by Stephen King. I headed over to the lift, and pressed the call button. A few seconds later, the lift dinged, and the doors opened. I hit the button for the third floor, and waited as the lift ascended. When it arrived at the designated floor, I stepped through the doors…right into the path of a thrown punch.
I flew backwards a meter, and sprawled on the ground. I noticed that someone was underneath me, attempting to shove me off them. I rolled off the person, who turned out to be a girl about my age (that is, my biological age of 16, not my elapsed age of ~21) and got to my feet. The person who had punched me, stood there menacingly.
“Watch where you’re going, newbie. You might get hurt!”
I looked over at the muscled teen standing near the lifts. He was dressed in casual clothes, and looked to be around 14. I turned to the girl, ignoring him for now.
“What’s your name?” I asked kindly. “And why is this PetaQ attempting to knock your lights out?”
She was crying a bit, so I offered her a handkerchief I portaled out of my Bag of Holding. She accepted the piece of cloth, and blew her nose on it.
“My name is Ivy Lester,” she said, glaring at the boy. “This…moron…tried to hit on me. I told him to bug off, but he tried to pin me against the wall. I slapped him, and shook free, so he tried to hit me. Then you got in the way!!”
I frowned, and turned to the boy. “You do know that sexual harassment is a crime, right?”
He sneered. “Oh look at you Superman with your little Louise Lane!! Do I look like I give a crap?”
I shrugged. “Thought not. How about a little nap?”
He looked perplexed as I pulled a type-3 phaser out of my bag via portal, and shot him in the chest. He collapsed, snoring gently. I turned back to the girl, and asked her if she needed any more help.
“No thanks. By the way, what’s your name?”
“Jayden,” I said, shaking her outstretched hand. “Jayden Reynolds.”
She smiled, and thanked me profoundly. I accepted her thanks, and told her where to find me if the unconscious boy came looking for more trouble. She politely declined, and walked down the corridor away from me. I looked at the signage, and walked in the opposite direction towards my new room.
The room I had been assigned was about 6x4 meters in area, and looked quite comfortable. The floor was lacquered wood, and there were two against one wall. A study desk and chair was provided in one corner, and a curtained window looked out over the grass at the front of the dorm. A few more students were streaming in through the front, and I noticed that a few were wearing a school uniform of some kind. I looked round the room, and set my bag down on the bed closest to the window. I sat on the bed, and pulled out my old MacBook that had survived so many adventures with me. Of course, there had been a few modifications, so the machine was specced way past the original design, and the new operation g system was definitely not the standard Mac OSX software, I began updating my log, which I had faithfully kept over the course of my adventures. I then opened up the browser, and tried to access the internet. The screen read ‘Unidentified Wireless Protocols with Antiquated Security Software: Override and Adapt??”
“Yes, Override and Adapt.” I said to the computer. The onboard voice recognition software activated the necessary protocols, and the computer instantaneously created a hidden admin-level user account on the school servers while also scanning the local wireless protocols and reconfiguring the settings to allow access to the comparatively ancient wireless configuration. Good old 2006. Despite having the prowess of various Gadgeteers and Devisors adding to the tech level of this universe, the wireless was still inferior to my own 2017. I immediately tried to access Netflix to register a account. No such website found. Oh. I forgot that Netflix was still only a physical movie rental chain, and hadn’t yet created the streaming service I was so fond of in 2017.
“Hello?? Anyone there?”
I closed my laptop and looked at the lanky teen who had just come through the door. He was dressed in casual clothes, and had a bulky duffel slung over his shoulder. He looked over at me, and grinned.
“You must be my new roommate!! I’m Alex. Alex Smith. What’s your name?”
“Jayden. Jayden Reynolds.” I replied, grinning. Alex set his bags down, and lay back on the bed. He reached out a hand at the still-open door, and telekinetically moved a wheelie bag through the door. He then stood up, and closed the door without using his powers.
“So you’re a TK guy huh?” I said. “Where do you hail from, Alex?”
“I was born in California, but I’ve lived in Australia most of my life. We moved back here about three years ago, and then I manifested my powers. My family sent me here to get me away from the Knights of Purity. Last I heard, the bastards burned down my family’s home with my mum still inside. My dad’s still alive though, but he’s in witness protection to avoid the Knights catching onto the fact he’s still alive. They were mutants as well.”
“Oh. I’m so sorry. However, I hail from Australia myself!! Where are you from?”
He grinned. “Eastern Sydney. A place called Chippendale.”
I boggled. “No fucking way. I’m also from Chippendale!!”
He laughed. “Well maybe we bumped into each other at some point??”
I lost my grin. “We couldn’t of. Unless you can hop dimensions as well and happen to have visited the year 2017.”
He laughed a bit, then realised I was serious. “That’s your power??? You can travel between dimensions???”
I nodded. He began barraging me with questions, which I tried to answer as best as I could. As I lay back, sitting in a bedroom at a school for mutants in a dimension very removed from my own, I realised that some things never change, no matter how much you bridge the gap between worlds. I realised in that moment that although I was in a different continent in a different universe on a parallel earth, and that I had no way to get home, or even continue roaming the multiverse in what was true freedom, I could feel one thing: hope. Hope for whatever future awaited me at this school. Good…or bad.
Author’s note: OK. This marks the second instalment in the Jayden series. Now, I would like to point out a few things. Firstly, Jayden is going to probably be a little OP. Not due to powers, but due to the fact that a) he has a pretty-much infinite storage space in his backpack; b) he has visited thousands of universes and ‘borrowed’ weapons, devices and various pieces of technology; and c) a lot of those things are guns. I know that I could easily not introduce weapons from other works. But, wouldn’t you like to see what the Sonic Screwdriver does in the Whateleyverse, or how powerful some of the weapons from Destiny are? Since he’s also a gadgeteer, he’s also going to be modifying some of this tech, and building new gadgets out of the pieces of this tech. On another note, thank you!!! I don’t know if it’s normal for 9 people to rate this story with 5 stars, but Thank you so much!!! I really thought this story wouldn’t kick off with this community, but My (Non-existent) God!!! Thanks WA fans!!! Reminder to people interested in reading my prior work, read my other fanfiction at https://www.fanfiction.net/~crazymihn
