Twisting the Hellmouth - Latest News

Just a reminder that Twisting the Hellmouth is solely funded by member donations.

We do not show ads, nor do we plan to have ads.

In our 20+ years of operation we have never accepted advertising.

If you come here and are seeing ads, that is not something we are doing! That is something being inserted by someone unaffiliated with this site. Either your browser, browser extension, ISP, VPN, or some malware/adware is inserting ads.

Note: We also do not have any kind of mobile app for accessing this site and cannot provide any kind of support for such things. You should never have to pay (donations excepted, which are strictly voluntary) to read fics on our site.

We do allow fics to be downloaded in several ebook formats for offline use using a normal web browser (Not sure if Calibre has a plugin for us?) (The interface for downloading stories for offline reading could certainly be better but we do assume you are doing so from a normal web browser and ebook reader on your device of choice, not thru some app we don't support.)

Thanks.

August is fast approaching and our annual Fic'A'Day challenge will be upon us in no time. The moderators have been discussing how to manage the challenge now that LiveJournal is becoming a less viable option. It's been suggested we host the challenge on the forums and we allow stories to be posted here and on the main-site to participate.

Please come join in the discussion on the forums! Click on the "Comments" button below to be directed to the forums post.

What’s a Rule 3? One of our many "Posting Rules"

It states:

We will not archive stories that crossover with the following, or crossover with authorized derivative works based on the following (followed by a list of authors)

But what does that mean?

Many years ago, the TtH Management (aka The Founders & Mod Team) decided to honor the wishes of IP Creators (aka source material Authors) who did not want people to write fan fiction using their IP (Intellectual Property). And by extension, any official derivative Works (Movies, TV Shows, etc).

Though, in at least one case, although the author allowed fan fiction the conditions they placed on that were not compatible with our own site posting rules.

Now, the legality of such requests is not really the issue. The legal situations regarding fan works has always been a grey area. We felt it was/is important to honor their requests.

(Yes, We know - AO3 doesn’t have such a rule but we aren’t AO3)

So, what can you, as an author, do? Check Rule 3! And if you have legitimate proof that an author on that list has changed their mind about fan fiction? Let us know! And the opposite also. If an author doesn’t want fan fiction of their works, but they aren’t on our list - that just means we don’t know that.

(And don’t forget that we may not allow crossovers with works by certain authors (Or Real Person fics) but there’s always AO3. In general, if you think we're too strict, AO3 probably allows it. No matter how fond we all may be of Twisting the Hellmouth -- Sadly, not all fics fit our rules.)

(And yes, we require Disclaimers on all posted works for similar reasons. They aren’t legally binding but are meant to show respect for IP creators/owners. Among other more esoteric reasons.)

Just a reminder (again) that Twisting the Hellmouth is, and has been for 2+ decades (yes, we've been around that long) a Buffy the Vampire Slayer crossover fan fiction archive.

As such, we have rules about what can be posted here. And we take it seriously. Before posting a story here, look at the Site Rules, especially Rule 8.

Although we do allow non-Buffy the Vampire Slayer crossover stories to be posted here, they, and the author posting them must meet the few exceptions to Rule 8.

TL;DR Version

Want to post a non-Buffy crossover* here at TtH?

1. It must not be your 1st story posted (that must be a Buffy crossover.)
2. You must have 50 percent or more Buffy crossover stories already posted (by story and word count)
3. Or (instead of #2) be a donor to the site.

Note: Existing non-Buffy crossover stories can be updated even if the above doesn't apply but they must have been posted while you were in compliance with Rule 8.

Thanks.

The Management

* A non-Buffy crossover is any story that is not a crossover between Buffy the Vampire Slayer (BtVS) and any other fandom. These include:
- any story that does not include any BtVS content (crossover or not - a crossover that does not include BtVS is a non-Buffy crossover)
- any story that is just a BtVS and/or Angel story (we consider Angel, the Series to be part of the same Buffyverse as BtVS for crossover purposes.)

Apparently, some readers don't understand why stories may be quarantined or why they may not be instantly unquarantined.

Being quarantined isn't usually a bad thing. Just a simple 'Please fix this problem!'

The author of a story is told why a story is quarantined WHEN it occurs. They are then given the opportunity to fix the issue or issues.

And it is up to the moderator who quarantined a story to decide if the author has met the Rule requirements that caused the quarantine in the first place. This often happens within a few hours of the quarantine.

But what if it doesn't?

The moderators have lives. Yes, really. We do. We do not sit around and wait anxiously for an author to fix a quarantine issue. It may take hours, even days from when an author fixes a quarantine until it is removed from quarantine. (e.g. I personally, in real life, work for a living. If I quarantine a story early in the morning, I may not see an unquarantine request until late in the evening.)

Does that "suck" for the writer? Sure. If it takes them long enough to fix an issue the story may fall off the Latest page. Could it have been avoided? Sure, by checking your story before posting it.

What's the most common quarantinable offense? Forgetting to add a disclaimer. A simple thing, but not optional. And, in most cases the author DID forget to add one because they were in such a hurry to share their story with everyone. But it's still required.

Note: Only an author of a story has any standing to complain (to the Mod Team) about their story being quarantined. Or to request that a quarantine be removed. It's between them and the Mod who quarantined it, and no one else.

It's Halloween! An important date in Buffy canon.

So... Celebrate!

Read/review some Halloween fics (There are 88 'pages' of Halloween pics on the site, according to TtH Advanced Search -- Advanced Search!.)

Eat some Halloween candy!

Dress up in a costume!

If you live in a country that "celebrates" Halloween with sugary treats given to costumed hooligans, do that (If you don't eat it all yourself!)

Go to a local Halloween party!

Write a Halloween quick-fic!

A challenge from FallenGods

There are very few stories, even official episodes in which the Goa'uld are presented as anything other than cliché riddled Evil overlord drop outs. These are beings born with knowledge beyond any human. That can live for more than 25,000 years. Ba'al was the closest we ever got to a decent Goa'uld character, and even he failed to rise much above bond villain status. Why can't we have competent, thoughtful, cunning, cautious or insightful characters? Is the SGC filled with such incompetents that they can only defeat straw Goa'uld?

Well fine that's how they want to write their little...
