Not much to report this week. A few tweaks here and there on the site as I have time to clean up how things work... mostly streamlining while I try to think of work arounds for more complicated bits and pieces.

From the story side of things: I've got a new story and character from Morpheus to share with everyone. Also, coming up in the next month or so, We'll wrap up Odds and Ends (and with that, close out the first year of school in the original timeline). I've got a piece introducing my Fall 2007 freshman character, Esoteric... and Morpheus has been waiting eagerly to sweep in and fill most of the cottage himself.  I understand we also have a couple summer break stories in progress. Some of the titles I've seen people mention progress on include "Boys of Summer" and "I Don't Think We're in Kansas Anymore."

On the Gen 2 side of things, E.E. and Bek are working to get the next part of Road to Whateley out the door to you... which will let us release the last part of Calamari and move on to the 'third' story in our Gen2 plotline, where we reintroduce you to Whateley Academy. Then we might release a few Gen 2 origin stories. There's Bek's origin for A.J. "The Curse of the Dragon Queen", and Morpheus has Bianca's backstory "Written in Blood" ready; and there's Tia's story from Nagrij tentatively called "Down the Rabbit's Hole"...  Of course, we probably won't get through ALL of those before we move on to story four of the main plotline, which will be from my character Shieldwall's pov... called "Good Cop / Bad Cop."

While a lot of this isn't done 'right now'... most of it is getting close and the only reason I'm not releasing things faster is that there are a few linchpin pieces that we want to release 'in order' that are going to act a lot like the latches on the overhead storage compartments on airplanes when we finally do get them up. I think it's safe to say that 'most' of the rest of the year should be very positive in quantity of stories released... especially if I can get the fan fic team moving forward (not that THEY are dragging their feet, it's mostly ME that's the bottleneck in that system right now... and I want to solve that problem).

If this is the first time you've been back on the site since last Monday, you'll notice that there have been a few changes. I finally combined adequate understanding of how some of the modules work (and how to work around them to make them do something the way we want them to) and sufficient time to do some site work in the same week. As a result, I've restructured the menu system into something that (while not ideal) should be functional for everyone. This is important because some aspects of the drop down menu system that we had been using required people to get creative in their means of finding links to stories. Now, everyone should be able to find and access things quickly and easily.

The different types of stories can all be found via the Stories button. The Forums, your private messages, various profile and forums settings, and such can be found under Community. Policies, FAQ, Help, links to the WIKI and background material about the Whateley Universe can be found under the WA Universe button. If you're an author or admin, you have some additional buttons... if you are not a registered member, you have fewer.I've also rearranged how the Latest Articles list works (and where in progress stories are placed). As a result, you should have a fairly consistent list of recent stories linked there, for quick reference to what you've missed if you haven't dropped by in a couple weeks. The Latest Articles list, given the current rate of releases, should have everything new from the past two to three months. As we start to accelerate that pace, it will probably reflect just shy of two months of releases.

The story migration is COMPLETE! WOOOOO!. Well, ok, there are some duplicate transfers and we have found one or two that we might have missed... but it should currently be possible to read through the entire body of canon stories without leaving the new site. We do still have some things to move into place (in the Library section, for example)... and then in the next few weeks, I'll be turning my attention to the Fan Fiction authors who have been patiently (or not so patiently) waiting for me to get around to reviewing their submissions for published fan fic. Expect some of those to be popping up shortly.

In the meantime, for this week: we have the final few chapters of Whisper completing the trek of this young lady to Whateley... where she immediately goes into hiding and is mostly out of sight for the Spring quarter.

  • A few tweaks ...

Some of you might have noticed or caught the forums post announcements about some changes that I finally got around to making. I've tweaked how some story submission things happen, which doesn't really impact most of the visitors to the site but it DOES cut down on the number of things that bottleneck at my approval. It means both fan fiction and canon authors can start projects without me being online and ready to change some settings on their newly submitted story before they can do any editing or have their peers look at the story for feedback. That'll help the behind the scenes process lots.

I've re-arranged some of the menu and sidebar positions a little. The Login panel is now upper left and is there all the time, it SHOULD also now include a note that you have mail if you get a Private Message.

Over on the right hand sidebar, you might have noticed that I added a little Sudoku panel. It interferes with some of the features in the forums, so I turned it off there... but if you're just killing time... now you can play Sudoku while waiting for the story deadline to happen.

I'm planning a few more fixes to the menu bars. I'd like to get everything organized in a way that doesn't need a drop down (like the one under Content) and I'd also like to get the User menu out of the left sidebar. It doesn't have much in it if you aren't an author or admin, anyway. So as soon as I figure out how to get the menu modules to do what I want them to, you can expect those to streamline some.

And, of course, continued thanks to Phoenix-Spiritus and Valentine and other fan fiction authors who have helped out with the migration of the story collection/archive to the new site. I think we might have passed 3/4 or even 4/5 transferred in the past couple days... and the list of remaining items to migrate gets visibly smaller almost every day. Please be sure to thank them for their help, I do what I can, but if these folks hadn't helped, we'd still be months away from being finished.

Finally... the main reason people show up for these Front Page News posts... today's story release. We're going to go with the continuation of Elrod's Combat Finale based mystery and the hunt for the gambling leak. That'll move us closer to the official end of the Spring semester and the arrival of a new class of freshman. So here is "Odds and Ends (Part 2)" ... if you are looking for Part 1, you can find it along with Part 2 in the Content->Canon Stories category list.

We now have one group of teens settling in at their hotel for the evening in New York City... maybe. And its starting to look like they might escape to Whateley without getting involved in whatever events have been stirring up the hornets' nest. Well, we're not done with them yet. But first... let's introduce some more Gen 2 students!

Here's "The Road to Whateley" from Bek and E.E.

  • End of January already!

Time keeps on slippin... in to the future....

And it's serious about it these days. Hard to believe its the end of January already. The month went by faster than I thought... as I discovered this morning when I found a couple late notices in my email for utility bills that I should have paid by last week. Oops.

On the bright side, more time passed means more story releases. Today's content, from Elrod (with bits and pieces from a number of us, including some folks not on the canon list), is a piece called "Odds and Ends" ... and it's a bit of an end of semester wrap up, with some combat finals and end of school year stuff to finalize things so we can move on to the new school year. You can, as usual, find this story over in the Content->Canon Stories section. Enjoy!

When last we saw our Gen 2 teens, they were loaded into a large airport hotel shuttle bus burning rubber on its exit from the JFK Airport in NYC just in time to avoid a sudden arrival of SWAT, MCO, and an entire bowl full of alphabet soup agency quick reaction units. The kids are on their way into Midtown, to a Comfort Inn within walking distance of Hell's Kitchen, the Theatre District / Broadway, and... Central Park. Knowing that something has the locals acting like the anthill has been kicked over, the smart thing for a bunch of mutant kids to do would be to pile into the cozy hotel rooms the Academy has arranged for them, power up the entertainment systems, and order some room service in teen sized (or Energizer sized) portions.

But this is a Whateley Academy story... and put mutants + New York City + holiday into the same pages... you don't have to be a probability warper to guess that this isn't going to go anywhere near that smoothly.

I'm sure lots of people were hoping for another helping of Calimari today. Including some Gen 2 authors who gave me dirty looks when I posted a list of what I intend to release over the next several Mondays. Yes, when I return to the staff lounge later, I will need to make a few 'check for traps' rolls...

However, I want to get something else in your hands that E.E. put together and promised you back before the holidays. This is a little something he put together using Dragon Dictate and wanted to share to thank everyone for their generousity and help with his medical treatments. It's called "Game Time" and it'll fit in with all the Star Wars talk going on lately... though it's based on The Old Republic, the MMO version of the old history well before even the prequel trilogy. You can find it in our Content->Library section.

  • A New Year and Years to go!

Ok... last week was all about Gen 2 and the new team kicking off the second time line. This week, being the first week of a New Year, is an entirely appropriate time to begin our discussion of the future of the Whateley Academy. And its past. Or, more specifically... now that we have a second group of authors working on stories, what are we planning to do about keeping the new from overshadowing the old... and for further expanding on the world of the Whateley Academy.

Well, first of all; I want people to know that while we haven't hung up a real physical sign saying 'help wanted' ... we are obviously aware that the author roster for the original timeline is a little spare. And we intend to do some things to resolve that issue. But before we get to aggressive with that, we're looking at doing some organizing of our backlog... the plans, the plot lines, the foreshadowing, and all the rest of the things that make it incredibly difficult for us to recruit an author and actually work them into the existing timeline. You only have to look at the student list on the wiki to know that even if someone did come in as a new author, it's not as simple as just saying "Oh yes, I'm writing PoV of this character from the Masterminds who hasn't ever shown up on camera" ... because, we all know who all the members of the Masterminds are.

Obviously, we want good authors. The best way to make sure that we know you can pen a story is to be visibly doing so. Fan Fiction is one way. I'm also open to giving people 'project stories' as trial runs. What this will mean is we'll give you a pre-developed character, someone who if you've been reading Whateley, you will recognize... and a set of conflicts, plot points, and scenes... and have you write the story. Handled well, you'll have a published canon story under your belt even without being officially a canon author. Handled poorly... well, we'll see where the problems are and let you know what areas you need to work on before we would consider you as a canon author.

As we find authors (and we get the original timeline key plotline data reined in), we'll add a couple more authors to the original timeline writing. Some of the Gen 2 authors might also step into working on Gen 1 characters in the same way that Gen 1 authors may have a Gen 2 character they are working on. This will, of course, depend on how they're meeting their Gen 2 story commitments and so on. And then, other authors not specifically detailed to Gen 1 or 2 may begin working on the 'Gen 3' concept... which atm is sounding more like a non-timeline than a timeline specific group. One focused on telling stories from before the 1990s or after 2025... or otherwise 'outside' the bounds of what we'd worry about causing continuity issues for the original timeline or Gen 2.

So if you have an interest in being a Whateley writer and missed the chance to join the Gen 2 project, stay tuned in the next few months. There are also some potential openings for an editor or two... which would mean, yes, having access to canon backstory details and seeing stories long before they release... of course, we all know that the editors would more than earn that access. Opportunities may soon appear.

Something else that is going to appear... today... is the third and final part of Elrod's "Charging Buffalo, Hidden Dragon." You'll find that under Content -> Canon Stories

  • More introductions

I've spent most of my spare time over the past week considering how to introduce this story. The ideas have ranged from "I'll let it speak for itself" supershort up to another variation on the Gen 2 announcement a couple weeks back, talking about the authors and characters. Ultimately, I decided what needed mention was something about how 'we' as a community move forward. And I had most of that written when I realized that I was using entirely too many words for what is actually a relatively simple concept:

    Be respectful

Gen 2 Story Release (Fall 2016 'pilot' story): "The Big Apples Comes With Calimari" Part 1 is now publicly available in the Content->2nd Gen Canon section of the site.

    E. E. Nalley's gofundme project to cover medical expenses for his neck injuries that impact his hands and thus his ability to write has raised $1100 (goal was $700). The project is still 'open' if you are interested in chipping in to make sure E. E. gets the care he needs. More details available at the gofundme project or in the forums.

  • Merry Christmas and other holiday greetings

No matter what your religious, spiritual, or family traditions might be; I'd like to take this moment to offer my well wishes to all of you. From authors who I speak with nearly every day to readers who never register or actively participate in the community in any way; I hope all of you and your family have a wonderful holiday season.

For those of you who do not actively follow the forums discussions, I'd like to share something that came up this week. Most people may not be aware but E.E. injured his neck during the summer and has been having more and more trouble as the year progressed. One of the side effects of this alignment problem is that he has been experiencing increased problems with his hands... which greatly impacts both his regular employment and his writing. He has seen a doctor and they believe they can restore things with a series of treatments. Most of this is covered by insurance, but there are still some co-pay and other issues that he will need money to cover. To support this, E.E. has set up a gofundme project. This has already met its base goal due to the extreme generosity of a fan; however, I hope people will still consider tossing something in the hat to help out if you can manage it. I'm sure we all know that when dealing with medical stuff, there are always extra costs... even if its just a tank of gas to drive to the appointments.

    As for this week's offering?

Let's go with Part 2 of Elrod's "Charging Buffalo, Hidden Dragon". You can find it over in the Canon Content section of the site.

Also, congratualations go out to Dom for being the first of the Fan Fiction Authors to navigate the publishing path for inclusion in the site Fan Fiction section. Part 1 of his story "Fate Sucks" can now be found in the Content->Fan Fiction section.
