What can be done with PSI? Do we know?

Do we know all the capabilities of PSI ?

Well, personally, I want to ask if the ability to obscure a person's memories from PSI discovery via generating new memories for the PSI to discover, while having the person whose memories have been tampered with, keep full knowledge of the true memory.

Also, should all these Q&A questions, (mainly mine?), be moved to Review Session: Concepts?

Well, I recall that Mahren shielded his thoughts and memories by keeping painful memories around where the invading psychic would trip over them. So, presumably a similar trick could be done with false memories. I think the memories would have to have a strong emotional impact in order to work, though. Peaceful memories wouldn't work. And I'd guess that emotionally potent false memories, even if added with the informed consent of the receiver, tend to affect the subject and probably not in a good way.

Ayla found a way to block Fubar; just kept humming a song from Brass Monkey.

True, but I was thinking a protection from less obvious searching, like Dr. Bellows's "low-level psychic ability that lets [him] see something of the stressful moments of your life.", which I think is touch-triggered?

Yes, for Dr. Bellows, he respects doctor-patient consent and stuff, but what if you had secrets that you want hidden, connected to such moments, and you aren't a telepath or psychic null or whatever...

I was thinking about having a memory to hide your secrets while leaving you able to use those secrets.

Would hypnosis-triggered memories, like Merry, be sufficient to hide from such a probe?

I'd guess that anything the subject can recall can be found by a psychic invader. Mahren's trick was that memory recall is not linear and recalling a memory will trigger other memories, which in Mahren's case had a good chance of being too horrible for the invader to stomach. It wasn't an active defense like Ayla's was, but a passive memory association reflex.

I'd guess that several of Domoviye's characters have similar defenses by now. But it's hardly a practical technique for the average person.

A hypnosis burial might work. You give the subject a trigger and enough knowledge of the memory so that they can recall it at will, but an invader wouldn't be able to use the trigger so they would be unable to access the memory unless they trick the subject into accessing it for them. But this would cut the memory off from the brain's normal indexing system, and make it a lot less useful as a memory than normal, even if it's still partially accessible.

This is, of course, all supposition on my part.

This is, in the big picture, an impossibly complicated question without any straight answers. Why? Because it depends on a lot of factors, the strength of both the Psy's projective and receptive telepathy. Their intelligence and wit (both their mental processing and problem solving ability and their mental agility and flexibility). It also depends on special quirks to the nature of their psi abilities, and how they were taught. And finally, it also depends on the mental 'construct' in which their power operates... which is partly as aspect of training and partly just personal perspective/mindframe.

Could you use hypnotic suggestion to bury secrets and rely on triggers to recover those memories as needed?

Well, yes... but a strong enough, agil enough Psi will be able to see the constructs of the triggers and they can follow the details back to the box o memories that they are linked to.

Or you might be a quirk oriented telepath like Kimmy Descadero in the Fling stories... who has a knack for 'seeing' the knots in the mental constructs that denote hidden details / secrets. And while she cannot generally read people, she actually can read those knots and anything tied to them. So 'creating' hypnotic triggers and burying more memories as secrets would actually make it easier for her... because you are actually creating more readable nodes in yor memories fro her to do.

you can have an effective memory block if you train yourself to not include memories that are not relevant to the current conversation / situation.
for example, you remember nothing in detail about a person, unless you are talking to / about them.

this would make any psychic intrusion less effective since you do not have a habit of skimming memories for relevancy most memories are not accessed so aren't available.

and yes, as odd as this sounds, I have that particular habit for my memories. It definitely helped when working in a bank, since I didn't remember peoples account information unless I was dealing with them.

Stupidity is a capitol offense, a summary not indictable one.
