Ectoplasm Manifestors

Softdreams created the topic: Ectoplasm Manifestors
Hello,

I was thinking of the full-scope of ectoplasm manifestors, although I do admit this question is centered around certain characters' abilities; to be specific, the most versatile ones (for example: Beltane, Thorn, Farrago, Penny Dreadful, Foxfire etc...). Also, references to anime/manga and comics abound in these questions.

Ectoplasm manifestations are basically dimensional goop drawn through the veils which are then given form by a Psi trait. So, I was thinking of a few techniques and whether or not they could be achieved by the mutants with a Manifesting trait.

For those familiar with Read or Die/R.O.D the TV, if a manifestor were to shape their ectoplasm into paper, could they achieve similar effects to the Paper Sisters?

If a manifestor shaped the goo into wings, could they apply their Psi trait to fly using these wings, or at least glide? Or make an sphere around them that lifts them up? (like Sphere does) Or a cloud to fly on?

Could a manifestor shape their ghostly goop into a symbiote-like being? Form weapons with it?

Can you make a manifested critter "talk"?

Can they use MATD to raise their body capabilities to Exemplar levels? Give themselves actual wings/wings/"exemplar" beauty and other extreme shifter effects? (I know it would take a LONG time, since MATD works like a corset.)

Can ectoplasmic shells emulate PK ones?

Can you make critters that are always suspended on air? Such as, demonic-like beings that are always levitating? Or manifested knives that follow around whomever you'll use them on?

Can manifestors spy others through their manifestations? ("Ask Not For Whom Belle Tolls" Kendall seems to be doing this through her manifestations, she sees and knows exactly what her perpetrators are doing, or so it seems by her timing.)

Can your manifest things in far away places? ("Ask Not For Whom Belle tolls" once again, she uses her manifestations to torment Farrago and his crew when they're in completely different cottages.)

The ectoplasm tricks your body into experiencing certain things, is this their Psi trait sort of carrying a hypnotic suggestion through the ecto? For example, Beltane's pies can trick your body into believing you've been drugged.

Does your Manifesting rating refers to how much ectoplasm you can draw, or how much you can use manipulate using your Psi trait?

Can ectoplasm manifestors create a fog of sorts? Or different states of matter?

Can you enchant manifested objects? Or charge them up with essence to achieve varied effects? Could you pass your manifestions off as other abilities? For example, devices, magic and other TK effects, like, umbrakinesis or hemokinesis.

What Manifesting rating would a character like Beltane/Farrago/Foxfire be rated at?

Anyway, basically dump on me all the information you've got on ectoplasm manifestors! I'm aware some of these questions sound idiotic, I just have way too many nonsensical questions.

Thanks in advance! Also pray to Bek's muse along with me so she puts out more Beltane-focused stories!

The most important thing to remember is that just because one Manifestor can do something, that does not mean all of them can. Not even with "enough training", because the character has finite time to spend playing with their power and they aren't really going to try.

Owl, in the 2nd Gen stories, is a manifestor and a member in good standing of the Flyers Club.

Softdreams wrote: Or make an sphere around them that lifts them up? (like Sphere does)

Sphere's bubble isn't physical, so not really. She's an energizer focused on kinetic energy, so I think she lifts herself up and her force field sphere centered on her goes with, without blocking her lift.

Softdreams wrote: Or a cloud to fly on?

Clouds float on air that is more dense than the cloud. A manifestor could make something that looks like a cloud, but they'd have to do their own flying if they want to land safely after it falls or is blown away.

Softdreams wrote: Could a manifestor shape their ghostly goop into a symbiote-like being? Form weapons with it?

Yes, both are discussed on the wiki page.

Softdreams wrote: Can you make a manifested critter "talk"?

I'll go out on a limb and say yes, since multiple bodies are possible with manifesting.

Softdreams wrote: Can ectoplasmic shells emulate PK ones?

That depends on what you mean by "emulate". Kristin's explanations suggest to me that PK ( a PSI-based power) would need to be involved to varying extents. Would it fool an experienced eye? Not necessarily.

If you have the TK strength, finesse, and concentration to keep them in the air, plus the composure to refrain from instinctively gutting someone with them.

It will also allow you to very quickly become acquainted with some of the Peacekeepers and Security, because running around with Blade Barrier up is even more inherently threatening than a shifter growing claws.

Maybe. However, this describes a situation that may more easily achieved through magic - by scrying on your own manifestation that happens to be there. Beltane's also capable of incorporating a camera + transmitter into something she controls.

No. Even if you can only make one one-pound brick at a time, with enough time spent making bricks, you can build yourself a fine wall.

Making your own personal tokomak is almost certainly OP for this universe.

Softdreams wrote: Can you enchant manifested objects? Or charge them up with essence to achieve varied effects?

Maybe you could, but what would be the benefit of expending essence that way instead of enchanting real materials which will have real correspondences with the magical energies needed for the enchantment? It will not be cheaper or easier, because magic always exacts its price.

Before you start using a manifesting ability to frame another student, just remember that the Staff have seen that trick before and know how to find out that it's been used.

Thank you for answering!

Yes, I'm well aware of Sphere's abilities, I was just wondering if a similar effect could be achieved through the use of ectoplasm.

The same goes for the clouds, I was thinking of an ectoplasmic cloud that's solid enough for a person to fly on, and guide telekinetically.

The answer to the following knives surely made me laugh! Uhm, it would still be a very efficient ability in combat. As for the Peacekeepers and Security... It's only a matter of time.

Regarding the different states of matter, I was referring to making your ectoplasm look like liquids, or using ectoplasmic fog to render your opponents unable to see. All useful tricks.

As for the framing; interesting take on it. *laughs*

Ectoplasm is in simplest terms - extremely dense (to the point of having physical form) energy drawn from the Veil (the boundary between the various dimensions/realms/etc).

What specifically can be done with it? Anything your power set happens to be able to impose on available energy.

What we have typically said about the application of Manifesting is that the simplest uses are the most durable. Manifesting a weapon like a spear or armoring over one's body allows the ectoplasm to be fairly strong/durable and to remain that way for a long time if not permanently assuming the shape and material imposed on it. More complex creations... like live action cartoon characters playing out a scene... are complex on the surface with lots of spectacle, but they are only 'skin' deep shapes painted with sound and light mapped over jello mold shapes. And they'll last about two seconds past the point of the Manifestor ending focus on them.

As such, we've said that it is possible to manifest something like a robot or a railgun or something similar... that APPEARS to work like a robot or railgun. But it would be all on the Manifestor to make it happen. If you opened up the railgun to look at parts, there'd be nothing inside. It wouldn't have parts making it work. Not without enormous focus and power from the Manifestor (outside of the scale we normally allow for the WU). A simple machine? Maybe. But the complexity of even 'articulated' armor would be about the most you should expect.

Fate guard you and grant you a Light to brighten your Way.

Very useful information!

I believe Beltane is a character who would be able to perform a powered down version of most of these techniques. What Manifesting level would she be rated at?

Have we been introduced to any other ectoplasm manifestor who are currently students at Whateley that are versatile enough to perform some/most of these techniques if they truly applied themselves to it?

By the way, by performing I'm referring to powered down versions of these techniques. For example: Farrago, who's really versatile even if he's not a high-leveled manifestor.

Slight tangent question: is there a Beltran style manifester around for Gen 2? My Muse wants to be evil towards some Amazons and/or OSDuds.

I am a caffeine heathen; I prefer the waters of the mountain over the juice of the bean. Keep the Dews coming and no one will be hurt.

Well, there's Penny Dreadful, she manifests ectoplasmic zombies

I love watching their innocent little faces smiling happily as they trip gaily down the garden path, before finding the pit with the rusty spikes.

I believe Penny Dreadful is the only one we've seen so far, although her powers haven't been fully explained yet, her powerset seems to be pretty similar to Beltane/Thorn's, but she's bent on manifesting zombies. Her character is really interesting though, one of my favorites in Gen 2!

Now that Penny Dreadful has been brought up! Is she a baseline mage/wizard too?
