Questions about the Labs, Magic and Tech:

Do you need special courses or something, to get yourself into the different Labs? Given the Jade has access to the Tech Labs' Scrap Bins, perhaps not, but then again, she got an official Gadgeteer rating, so perhaps...

Do the Magic Labs have scrap bins like the Tech labs do?

Depends what you mean by access.

Ayla visits the tech labs quite often, as do others, but wouldn't get given one.

But access to the magic lab is by a magic door to prevent non mages getting in.

Hmm... Is there anything technological/magical to stop people from using both labs' resources if they wanted to, if they could get inside? Like magical/key-card-sensing locks or something?

Well, yeah, but other than that. ;)

Of course, the trouble with a Magic lab waste bin is that the things in it might want to grab you and pull you in....

I love watching their innocent little faces smiling happily as they trip gaily down the garden path, before finding the pit with the rusty spikes.

Depends on the lab. There are a lot of different types and levels of lab in use, some of them large enough for a whole class... some of them private and only as large as needed for the equipment being used or the processes being developed. Some labs have strong security for privacy reasons. Some have strong security for safety ones. It is just as important for random wandering students not to walk into a clean room as it is for those same students to walk into somewhere that cutting edge IP protected tech is being developed. And, of course, the appropriate signage should be in place to indicate isolation and protocols.

Getting authorization from the Engineering Dept basically involves taking the entry level lab classes, where you are taught lab safety and what the different protocols mean. Useful classes in the sense that someone qualifying through them is basically getting all the core training it would take to be a lab tech somewhere. Ayla has NOT taken this course and that does restrict which labs he can visit. Same with Anna or anyone else who spends time with a friend who is on the Engineering track. Mostly the Engineering students are required to be aware of the mundanes in their midst and to avoid doing things that would get their friends in harms way.

A visitor's pass will only work if the lab is not currently locked into test protocols.

One big advantage that Whateley has over the real world is that a lot of testing and fabrication work can happen in sealed/isolated rooms using automation from separate control rooms that don't need any significant safety or material protocols. This isn't always used... after all, using powers sometimes involves a level of hands on that you can't get building with a Fabricator.

Fate guard you and grant you a Light to brighten your Way.

From memory, private labs seemed to always be secured, Laine's and Jobe's for example. Knick-knack's had a Whateley Security Guard standing guard.

Communal labs seem to be on a safety/security basis. The Chemlab where Hazmat works is always locked, but the giant robot lab seemed open to everyone, as is the autoshop.

The Fabrication Lab seems somewhere in between, as it seems to have easy access.

Don't the Workshoppers have a thing where the DoD or DARPA, or someone else, gives them, specifically them, contracts to try and do?

Like the non-lethal weapons platform project that Flashbang and Tinkertrain are working on?

According to Flashbang, she and Tinkertrain were working on a project to develop a non-lethal weapon system for a DoD contract competition during the Winter 2007 semester.

Or are those general contracts that are sent out for people to try and solve, like an X-Prize?

Real world DARPA has contests for projects they would like to see, such as the self-driving car competitions they've held. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DARPA_Grand_Challenge

During the second challenge, footage from one of the vehicles as it passed the vehicle ahead of it, brought cheers from the design team.
