What about in a non-support thread ... like something in the Quad? Trying to work out if its a matter of different permissions / set up in categories.

I looked in several threads, this one, one in the quad, one in the fab lab, and a couple of others, if the thread, or topic has been replied to (whether or not my post was answered) it locks the edit option out.

hmm... i know what i'd look for in the code if i were altering code to fix things. but i can't think of a place in admin settings that would make this possible. i'll have to check in with the forums support site and see if they did something that changed this and if its on a patch cycle. I've been through all the diagnostics for the forums and double checked the various settings and turned up nothing.

Thank you for your efforts. The only place it seems to me that it matters a lot is in the fabrication lab any way, as that is where you have an ongoing effort in writing posted. The main reason it matters there is that a story can undergo serious evolution as it is written and posted, so if you post the parts separately, likely with a multipart story, then you lock the earlier parts when you post the next part. And just for example, Nowhereville , is now in my file quite different in the first chapter.

One thing you could consider: Once the story is complete, pull together the text and revisions for publishing through the content management system as Independent Fiction. The editing software has its quirks (like creative handling of pasted text that requires symbols or extended alphabets), but the main restriction on editing is that you have to save your work every few minutes before the session times out.

There is also the advantage that those stories/chapters are read by many more people who wouldn't try to find a story in a discussion forum. For example, the six parts of "Into the Light" range roughly from 900 to 1350 hits.

You can be sure that I will be doing that (moving the whole thing over to WhatIF) as soon as I have a reasonably complete story. I expect if I format it like I have for the forum I'll have no problem copying and pasting the pieces? I'll cross that bridge when I get to it or start looking for a ford...:roflmao:

If you are transferring from forums to CMS, the most efficient way I can think of would be to pull up the forums page in "Inspect Source" and find the text of the page that includes your story. Forums posts themselves use BBC (bulletin board code) but in the site generated forums page, everything is converted to display in html... which means all your font sizing, bolds, italics, and so on will be intact using the html version of things... the only thing that you'd want to change to follow our 'ideal' encoding is that forums posts use 'soft line returns'. That means if you follow the normal empty line between paragraphs, when you inspect the code you'll see a line break < br > at the end of your paragraph and a second one on the empty line before the next paragraph. You can just do a find/replace run to put in
< /p >

< p >
in their place. and then just replace the couple lone < br > at the beginning of sections with a < p > ... that's a VERY quick transition compared to some other transfers (like from Word into the CMS).

I won't be transferring from forum, but from my file on my computer that has changed quite a bit from what is posted to the forum, if or when I get to the point that I'm ready to post to the WhatIF requesting feedback section. Then I expect there will be another learning curve to get things to look right. But I did a lot of the html in my WP document so... Maybe not as big a chore as it might otherwise be.

You can always hit up one of the staff for a hand too. Dan, Phoenix and I do a lot of document to CMS conversions and we each have our routines that let us do it without it being insane.
