The Garden of Good and Evil doesn't show up when I filter on Joe Gunnarson. Everything else of his (at least that I remember) does.

That one's listed under J.G. instead.

Thanks to whoever did it for fixing the Garden of Good and Evil. Now I've found that "Even Murphy's Law has Loopholes" isn't listed under Joe Gunnarson at all, even though the story lists both JG and EE as authors.

The site only allows articles to 'belong' to one author. We can tag it with both, and put both (many) in a byline... but outside of setting up some special registered accounts named specifically for author pairs/groups, there's no way to get the site to recognize it. And then, those authors wouldn't have ownership of the article for editorial value down the road and would have to use the special account (or have someone with publisher authority handle it).

Thanks for the explanation. So there's nothing that can be done cleanly to make "Even Murphy's Law has Loopholes" show up under both authors. That's ... inconvenient, but as long as I know about it, I can figure out which stories I need to work on next.

If I understand it, the difference in the author's name in the listing (J.G. as opposed to Joe Gunnarson) makes no difference to whether the "The Garden of Good and Evil" shows up under the author's filter. It started showing up for a day, and then vanished from the list again.

There are hidden things that control the world of which you know not and cannot see …

Whoops, sorry, that just slipped out, don't mind that at all, I was just going to say that the majority of the stuff that controls the way the stories are seen and sorted is buried in the setup of the site and not visible to non-admin users, also it has some inflexibilities inherent in its design that mean pretty main-stream "edge" cases occur and then "weirdness".

We try to paper over the cracks when we find them, but they are not always easily explained without access to the backend and seeing what limitation we ran into that time.

Sorry

By the way, how exactly are you "filtering"? Unfortunately there are a few different ways in the site to do it (Field at the top of the stories list, clicking the Author tags, etc.) and it could be we are looking at the wrong thing to fix

The author name field at the top, plus the number of entries per page field. Yeah, I'm quite familiar with "do everything for everybody" packages where there are simply too bleeping many configuration options, most of which don't quite do what you want as well as have hidden bugs and non-obvious edge cases. That's why I stayed in software development and maintenance instead of systems administration.

Oh - I didn't know there were other ways of doing it. At my age - I'm 75 - I don't spend a lot of time trying to solve puzzles that the User Interface people have left for the end user.

BTW - there also seems to be a problem where, if I filter on an author and it gives me multiple pages, then when I try to go to the second or third page, it loses the author filter. Completely. I haven't characterized it fully, but I've gotten into the habit of either specifying 100 or all unless I know what I want is going to be in the first 30 results.

If your filtering/search options aren't tracking through, you may be blocking cookies from us. Yes, my oatmeal - raisin - cranberry cookie crumbs are a necessary part of site operation. :)

Nah, I don't block cookies. I also don't buy anything off the internet because I don't have any of my financial information on any device that's accessible to the internet. What isn't there can't be stolen.

In any case, The Garden of Good and Evil is showing up on the top of the list again - I note that the author field says Joe Gunnarson rather than J.G., which may or may not have anything to do with it.

Thanks.
