XaltatunOfAcheron wrote: I decided to take a look at the status of Gen2. Here are the last dates of stories for the major characters:

Hikaru (Sunshine and Fury) - 9-19
Cerulea (Laura and the Fan Club) - 9/29
Eisenmädel and Calliope (Dorms 4.6) 10/02
Glyph (Ink in her Veins) 10/8
E.E. Nalley's complex - 10/10
Dragonsfyre (as e'er...) 10/17
- - -
Oh, yes, the last part of Flowers of the Sun is all by itself on 11/24 and 11/25.

Here's the thing though. Gen 1 authors may have character / protagonists in the mix of Gen 2 to help flesh out the timeline, but our characters are literally meant to be support not limiting factors. So... Cerulea at the end of Sept, E.E.'s inclusion of Kodiak's kids and Nick... don't really count.

What DOES count are:
NeoMagus: Tanya
Astrodragon: Morganna
MaLAguA: Vic
Wasamon: Erica
MageOhki: Taka or maybe Hikaru

And to a lesser extent the two characters whose authors didn't even really make it to the Gen 2 release: Bailey and Fiorella (who were created by Katie and Souffle Girl).

The idea that ANY of these characters is ahead of someone else is nonsense. It's a self-imposed limitation. Some of these characters don't have any critical stories to tell every semester. So waiting for those characters to catch up to someone two weeks ahead of them is ridiculous. There is only (on average) one MUST BE WRITTEN story in the Gen 2 timeline for each month in the timeline. Those are the stories that move forward the overall plot ... and other than being sure to properly foreshadow upcoming critical stories OR having 'aftermath' comments or impacts on characters and setting (without spoilering those events)... any author can move forward at whatever pace they like. They certainly don't have to limit themselves because others are two or three weeks behind. We're not writing journals.

I haven't seen a single author say "Please don't write/release your next story until I have a chance to get such and such finished and posted to the public. There's too much interwoven to do that without a spoiler or hurting my story." THAT should be the only reason to delay because other authors are not at the same point in the time line.

Look at how far Diane advanced the timeline using Ayla while most authors of Gen 1 were stuck at Halloween. It didn't hurt the quality of stories that were told later by Elrod or E. E. when they 'caught up'.

M3 also isn't as unified as Team Kimba. They have their own little pairings and each character has their own circle of naturally developing friendships at the school.

Tanya & (Sterling)
Tanya & Vic
Tanya & Vic & (Sterling)
Hikaru & (other RAs)
Hikaru & Tia
Hikaru & Taka
Taka & Jimmy
Jimmy & Vic
Laura & (girlfriend)
Laura & Bailey
Bailey & (Zapper)
Erica & Cally
Bianca & Morgana
Bianca & (Tinker)...(and other Underdogs)
Bianca & Morgana & (AJ)
etc.

Unlike Team Kimba, who maybe had two separate groups at the most, but they all always hang out every day in a common room or someone's room. Gen 2 might have started out as a ensemble story, but the authors definitely set it up to allow for significantly more character and plot line independence. M3 begin to diverge almost right away once they arrive on campus. Laura's plan for a good lunch table is what keeps them together, whether or not it's really dawned on them quite yet...

I cant agree with Kristin's premise that Laura and Bianca aren't main G2 characters, we've seen from what's been written so far that they are. They can't just be dismissed as an 'add-on'.

Second, yes, I could carry on writing Morgana forward in time, but unless we want to get into all sorts of awkwardness it will cause problems. I don't want to tie the other writers into what I think the timeline should be like, even ignoring the issue that I am supposed to be keeping to the main line stories, which currently I'm ahead of. So I've slowed down until the main story line progresses a bit further.

I love watching their innocent little faces smiling happily as they trip gaily down the garden path, before finding the pit with the rusty spikes.

Then someone needs to collect a list of "at what point in the timeline is your next story" ... because once I wrap up Good Cop / Bad Cop at the middle of Oct, *I* don't have another story from Jimmy until sometime late in the first semester (not quite winter's break, but post-Thanksgiving most likely). You might 'think' you're waiting on people to catch up... while THEY are waiting for Christmas to roll around.

Hell, I waited for year two of Gen 1 to happen for something like twelve years so I could introduce Esoteric. ;)

Anyway... the point of my posts is that authors who are active have permission to progress. They/you also have permission to write spin offs in either timeline (or to fill in 'universe' stories and flesh out noodles). Primarily Gen 2 authors should avoid spending too much time working with anything that is core Gen 1 plotline and Gen 1 authors should do the same about Gen 2... mainly because both are complex enough that it would be quite easy to get things mixed up in your brain and end up with continuity errors or spoilers (ie the same concept as avoiding reading too much WhatIF stuff without being careful to separate it from your canon work).

And Astro... you can agree or not. It doesn't change anything - both Elrod and Morpheus are active and if they are concerned that you are getting 'ahead' of them, they have the ability to write circles around you, me and three other authors combined to get back ahead. :-p

The other thing that has to be noted for authors and potential authors is that the Wiki for Whateley has become THE go-to reference, and the effort of the people inputting data and maintaining it is possibly the most important thing to letting us authors weave together disparate stories with overlapping characters. I'm probably understating things when I say that it's valuable; I'm not sure I could write some of my stories without that reference material. So on behalf of me (the only person I'm entitled to speak for), I have to say my hat is off to you, many thanks, gracias, pat yourselves on the back, you are appreciated, etc, etc, etc.

Anyone who comes in as a new author will quickly discover this to be a truth. And seriously think about joining the cabal. You, too, can become one of us

If you do "Special:re" and click on recent changes, you'll get a list of what's been changed recently. As of right now, the last 50 changes are by one person: me.

There are other people who do occasional changes, and they're very welcome, but I'm carrying close to the entire load of bringing the wiki up to date.

While I'm happy to do this as a service to a site that's given me a lot of enjoyment, there's one slight problem with depending on it:

I'm dying of untreatable stage 4 cancer. I'm surprised I've lived this long, and I'd be highly surprised if I make it to the end of the year.

I'm not looking for sympathy although healing prayers would be appreciated.

What needs to be done with the Wiki falls under two headers: bringing it up to date, and keeping it up to date once it's there.

I won't say this is easy, because the typical story part takes a couple of days of work. I'm serious about that.

However, to follow on with what Elrod just said, if you (and I mean the Canon authors) want this invaluable resource to continue to be useful, it needs to be maintained as stories are posted. There is no other way.

I think part of the issue with wanting other writers to catch-up is something that we can look at Calliope's Outing as an example of... certain "events" are planned ahead of time and if a writer wants their character to partake in the build-up and outcome of them, within their own stories, they need to be written at the same time or after the other author releases the story that the reveal happens in... this necessitates holding for a while when you could be moving forward.

In Astrodragon's case this could mean the difference between a Breakfast conversation the next day involving talking about Cally's problems or comforting her to talking about floral print dresses instead.

NOW... this has been a bit of a topic change from the thread... lets get back to discussing who people would like to see as Canon Authors...

Okay, time to put it bluntly.
We want to see if we can bring in fresh talent. All of you who write IF and microscenes and have asked "how do I become a canon author?" - this is your chance to indicate interest, and have your fellow Whateley fans / readers give their support and thumbs up.

If you might be interested, don't be shy. At all.
