I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.

  • I liked it. Of course, my brother EE sends me bits as he writes it, so I've seen more, but it's nice to see how Nyemoi is developing as a character, almost turning her back on her past life. Almost.

It might be because I've watched The Matrix too many times, but on reading that comment my immediate thought was "boy is she gonna be mindfucked if the VR really is just that good"

  • The entries in this storyline have each been interesting and entertaining... from what I see so far I can't help but think that this one will be as well.

Good start and I'd certainly like to see where it goes...

  • E.E. does a great job with this setting... but what really takes the cake for me in this bit is 'daddy' calling his Sith Lord daughter, Pumpkin. Cracked me up. :)

  • Thanks Kirsten! Star Wars always been pretty special to me, and I have to say the Old Republic is done a great job both being new as well as being faithful to the original. As far as Pumpkin goes, everybody was a kid at one point. :silly:

  • So far, it is. I've been giving EE feedback on it as he writes, and it's going to be a fun tale.

  • I seem to be missing a huge chunk of context here. From the viewpoint of someone who watched the SW movies (and some of the cartoons) and read a couple of the books - and enjoyed all of that - but spent close to zero time in the fan community or with any derivatives, I was quickly lost in WTH land.

Is there some precursor story (or game, or series) that the reader assumed to be familiar with? If so, a note in the story description or at the beginning would be helpful. I am sure that the story is much more enjoyable for those with the appropriate background.

  • The setting for this is the MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic. It is set about 3000 years before the Clone Wars so it was a period that give the developer a very free hand in what they could do. One of which was instead of only two Sith, there were tens of thousands fighting Jedi. You can get the back story of the game from SWTOR(dot)com.

  • And SWTOR itself is 'historically' set to a time based on the games and lore related to them that pre-date the MMO... "The Knights of the Old Republic" and its sequel. The Jedi and Sith are much the same philosophically as they are in the era of the movies... though in the intervening time frame a Sith Lord decides that the idea of having entire armies of Sith is contradictory to their philosophy. You can't possibly believe in 'power' when you have an 'army' of individuals who are lessers. He decides that the only true expression of the Sith doctrine would be for there to never be more than two Sith... a Master, in whom is embodied all the power and knowledge of the Sith... and a student, who seeks ever to overcome the Master... for there to be more than one Master is to share power or to lose everything when the weaker Master cooperates with a pupil. To have more than one student, is to allow them to cooperate and bring down a master before they are strong.

That is the 'state' of imbalance that Anakin eventually balances (supposedly), by killing the masses of Jedi...

There is, of course, lore in the game (and in books) that goes back even further... to days when the Jedi were not exclusive to Light and Sith to Dark... and, as E.E. shows, when the Sith code was interpreted differently. It's a very long and very complex history. :)
