  • While rereading Ayla and the Birthday Brawl, I noticed a discussion between Ayla and Puppet re: getting her in the sims and the problems that arose.

    Summarizing:
    1) The closed sim network. How to get a signal that far without compromising it.
    2) The challenge of getting a sim suit that would work around the pipes coming out of Puppet's body.

What if during the summer 2007 renovations, a (secret) data cable was run from The Sim Center to Hawthorne in order to give Thornies access to the sims? It would have to be kept under wraps and while secrets don't last long, perhaps a magical protection could be placed on it to secure its secrecy.

    Thoughts?

  • Mmmnnn. The possibilities of this being done for the thornies would be a wonderful idea. A chance to go outside their own room , and experience life would probably be a dream come true for a lot of them. Be it just using virtual reality, or hooking up a drone to that would be quite a concept.

Hooking it to the current SIMs simulations? I... Don't think it'd be a viable project.

Even if they could run cables that far up from underground, it'd be opening up a whole mess of vulnerabilities for direct access to the students' minds. As you said, the secret would only last so long.

But even without the hacks, this is also Hawthorne, where damage happens at all times. If those wires were to be hit at any moments, the problems would be disastrous.

All in all, I'd say the odds are very unlikely to make a sim connection all the way down there. I'm betting it'd be much more likely to have a secondary system somewhere, isolated from the old one... But the costs of that too would be pretty big.

Nice dreamy situation if it'd work, but I'd say unlikely.

If you really mean Thornies, and not just Puppet, those that could walk to the sims will. Anything and everything she uses has to be decontaminated before anyone with a more human body reuses it.

As to using magic to secure a brand-new suspiciously hefty underground fiberoptic conduit from one side of the campus to the others while there are students, staff, and contractors running around, Magic 8-ball say: "Don't count on it"

  • It would be a nontrivial expense and a considerable security risk. And, in the end, how many Thornies are full-time shut-ins like Puppet? Most of them appear to have at least some limited mobility and could go there if they wanted.

Even if the problems are solved, this still wouldn't help much the likes of Static Girl and Antenna, who are likely to fry the sims gear. So the number of students who would be benefited by this would be very, very small. When you run the cost/benefit analysis, it doesn't make sense.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

  • A much more likely scenario is a self-contained VR setup based on Sim technology. It wouldn't need to do the full range of things the SIM does, for example it could be specific to a single user doing a canned "training" scenario, but a VR simulator that surpasses the real world effects of a students powers while allowing them to train to control them could be a very beneficial teaching aid, and definitely something would make sense to install in Hawthorn.

That doesn't mean it exists though ;)

  • Antenna is a member of the Monster Squad, and participates in the Sims.

Ayla and the Mad Scientist wrote: I said, "Monster Squad? Their two big guns are Slab and Jimmy T, in the holos they like to surprise other teams with people like Antenna, and they have enough muscle that Montana's really just their deviser."

I think there are only two Thornies that can't leave their rooms without help, Puppet and Plasmoid.

    Don't Drick and Drive.
