  • Is Essence trading encouraged or used as a form of currency among students in the Mystic Arts department? It's understood most mages who go to Whateley are wiz-type mutants but certain Essence types can help flavour certain spells. For example: Kayda's constantly given a little raw Celestial Essence from Wakan Takan. Many mages would love to get their hands on raw Celestial Essence.

Since most students with access to raw Essence sources are Avatars, I figured... Could this be something that takes place behind the scenes, thus it isn't mentioned. There appears to only be one story for the time being that alludes to it happening; Sunshine & Fire.

“Not this time, Kurenai. If Hikaru is approached by any mages about essence transfers, or magical experiments you are to ping me immediately. Imp knows how to get my attention. “That was a tiny pull, shouldn’t have done more than made her feel chilly. That tiny tug pulled it all, and it looks like converted her entire energy store into essence.”

Or is it discouraged by the Mystic Arts faculty because of the risks to using raw magical energy? I mean... Whether the staff encourages it or not; Essence tranfers are more than likely taking place between upperclassmen. And... It seems safer than trading with interdimensional beings, and not as slow as gathering natured (but still earthly) Essence from the environment.

I could see it being used as a payment for favors, or "I will teach you these spells in exchange for some raw Water Essence". Mages are always experimenting with their powers.

  • It's not forbidden (because it can't really be enforced) but it's strongly discouraged.
Minor swaps are one thing, bigger stuff with the associated or implied mage contract would get Grimes on your back.
There is also the question of what do you want it for? And that some types of essence aren't terribly safe. So if you wanted to do a substantial transfer you'd probably need permission, that way they can check you aren't about to do something stupid (or at least more stupid than usual...)

  • We know that Chou has given a bit of Essence (which she called Chi) to the Three Little Witches, but the TLW squandered it and failed at lighting their Wells.

  • Ayla and Nikki had a discussion about this once, but I don't remember in which story. Ayla was, of course, thinking of the banking and exchange of Mana in financial terms.

  • Makes perfect sense, but like you said the rule cannot really be enforced, and knowing how experimental magic-users are; it's definitely happening. Most types of raw Essence are definitely dangerous; there's no arguing it but the Essence types found on Earth may not be as dangerous as ones found in elemental planes, so maybe the staff isn't as hard on the rules when it comes to these, this is just a guess, of course.

For example: the Essence found around a volcano might not be as corrupting or tainting as the one found in the Fire Plane.

  • The thought of Maledicta trying to approach Nacht for some Erebeal Essence is incredibly funny to me...

  • It's going to happen, obviously,
The best approach is not to forbid it entirely(which will just get ignored), but to discourage it and stress the issues and dangers, so hopefully the number of kids blowing each other up is reduced.

  • Not forbid, but regulate it in a way that the school can step in if something is not kosher. For instance, allow it only as long as the transfer is supervised by one of the Magical staff. Make the rules so that doing it aboveboard is just a minor annoyance for the students involved, but doing it secretly is risky due to being a major school rules violation with significant penalties. I mean, yeah, going to the Magical Arts building and doing it by the book is a bit of a drag and might take ten minutes from your busy schedule, but being caught doing an unsupervised transaction could get you a month of detention.

I need to remind myself to touch on this topic in one of Falconer's stories.

  • Exactly! Also there seem to be classes to get students get acquainted with the use of raw mystical energies under supervision: "Urban Essence Gathering 212" was once brought up by Lifeline and if the name is a give away... It seems to deal with the use of raw Essence. Now the students taking this class would surely not be freshman.

  • "Power Cultivation Diagrams" Do Essence sort of increases on its own in these diagrams or a fraction of the Essence in your well gets put away into it?

  • As your Will / mental discipline grows, you can make your Well have more 'gravity' to it... which results in it pulling in Essence more quickly (this is the effect that Wiz mutants have naturally as a result of their mutations ... but it does happen to a much lesser degree as a result of training/experience... though not enough that you'd jump ranks... not unlike exercise/physical training as it applies to Exemplar). More commonly, as Will improves, the Well acts less like a sieve and more like a solid container. What goes in, stays in... and is less likely to splash out as it fills up... or accidentally boil off as a result of sloppy intentions (the unintentional wish effect). The combination of these things makes it appear like you are growing the amount of Essence you can hold (growing your mana pool)... but mostly, that's a misconception. The Mage can usually acquire far more Essence in their Well than they do... they simply don't have the Will to hold it there. And most mortal Mages won't live long enough for their Will to completely contain their Well.

Those who do... and those Mages who are immortal... might actually reach the actual capacity of their Well. But by that point, they will also have likely mastered enough 'manipulation' of Essence techniques that they are no longer limited to working with the Essence that is only in their Well. As it should be. Since the only real benefits to the Well are the ability of passively gaining Essence... and 'filtering' raw Essence into something safe to use in simple spellcrafting (ie in spells that don't have Essence typing/filtration/purification as part of the spell's complexity... something that takes more spell crafting skill than an inexperienced Mage is capable of). A Master Mage will have numerous techniques for storing, refining, and manipulating Essence outside themself... and will likely only use the Essence within their Well as a last ditch effort. Especially non-mutant Mages whose Well accumulates slowly through passive means. The 'long game' of growing a storehouse of Essence would likely involve drawing out a small portion of one's Essence regularly... say, every other week... to keep from reaching capacity. This small amount would then be invested into projects to draw more Essence or exchange it for harder to acquire types and those gains reinvested until such projects grow in complexity enough to risk losing the gains... and putting those amounts into storage for other purposes.

Fate guard you and grant you a Light to brighten your Way.

  • Thank you so much for answering, Kristin! This gives me a lot of insight within the way baseline mages work and collect essence!

I was wondering about the way Essence transfers work within the school, since Whateley is filled with Avatars and some attuned mages here and there; which means raw Essence types abound and mages are known for being very experimental with their powers. The dangers of it, the safer Essence types to use, whether or not the Mystic Arts staff allows it, "Earthly" Essence types being relatively safer to use than the ones found across the planes, etc...

  • Why, are you suggesting that teenage mages would do something dangerosu just because they think its fun/cool/a good idea? :-p

  • Absolutely... I mean, I, myself, would sure love to try some "Fuego divino" (divine fire), or an "Oscuridad eterna" (eternal darkness) spells myself with their corresponding Essence types... But welp... I might just be slightly more devious than most. *manifests horns and a forked tail*
