  • So, leprechauns: Fay or Fae?
No idea why I'm asking other then it is the week of St Patrick's day.

  • Ah, leprechauns... the only kind of legendary magical being that was *explicitly* said to just be a legend on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I wonder if they exist in the Whateley Universe?

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

  • And for added amusement/shenanigans; how different are the actual beings compared to the 'common' lore?

  • Well, the "treasure at the end of the rainbow" bit is pretty easy to do -- you just have the entrances to the leprechaun homes only appear during the final moments before a rainbow fades away (i.e. it's the temporal end of the rainbow, not the (non-existent) spatial end). As for the leprechauns themselves, I say they're little humanoid flower spirits (specifically paintbrushes for the American variants of the Leprechaun), thus the green and orange color scheme and why they're associated with rainbows (rainbow implies sun + recent rain, meaning the plants just got watered and are now being fed). The pot of gold is actually just nectar and products made from nectar, though usually with magical properties of some sort depending on what that specific leprechaun clan was focused on. The more common effects would be essence boost, moderate healing, or mild rejuvenation (five to ten years). Alternately, have it be liquid sunlight collected during the rainbow and stored away to sustain the leprechauns while they wait for the next rainbow.

Leprechauns are Faerie, they are entities mostly related to a group of fae called the Smallfolk. Think of smaller humanoid entities such as Gwen's pixies to maybe the size of the "Brownies" we see in Fey's Lady-In-Waiting.

Smallfolk are fully recognized by other faeries as their own entities and thus have their own nobility etc. The most powerful was once Finn Bheara, a powerful Prince in his own right.
