  • Okay, this might be incredibly arcane to most people, but I don't care, it's a satisfying realization to me. I've been rereading gen 1 stories recently, specifically Tennyo's Easter. I noticed an interesting comparison between Whateley's distant-past cosmology and real world astrophysics. I realized it when Yuki's phrasing when explaining something was "but the universe was much smaller back then".

In Tennyo's Easter, it's revealed that just around two thirds of the universe's age ago, the incursion of the outer gods happened because of something the Isokist, the Star Stalker's creators, did, before some third faction mostly but not entirely drove them back out. I don't know if the outer gods would have anyhing to directly do with this parallel, but that time saw a pivotal conflict on a truly universal scale, with a terrible price attached, and naturally bringing many changes to the universe as a whole with it.

At roughly around the same time in real world astrophysics, the expansion rate of the universe is understood to have stopped decelerating and began accelerating again. It's said that before that time gravity dominated the universe's overall motion, then there was a tipping point, after which dark energy now dominates it. Nobody knows why, but the fact that observable deceleration turned into observable acceleration around that time is not in dispute.

Now, in the real world, this is probably just a consequence of shifting density, but I can just imagine that in the Whateleyverse it could be something a lot more interesting. Maybe dark energy itself didn't exist before that moment, and the universe was not doomed to expand endlessly.

  • We have smart authors. We're all well read. We like to sneak things into the stories for clever readers. But also sometimes we just luck onto things. Is this one of those things or something an author read and slipped in there to see if our readers caught it? I don't have an answer for you. But it is cool that you found it and made the connection... whether one of us set it up or it was coincidence, its still a good find. :)

    That we can discern mathematically.

It's also possible that they can exist in five dimensions but belong in not one of them.

Does that imply that Mr. Mxyzptlk is a GOO?
