  • The Gen 2 speculation thread got into the talk about how different the WU technology development cycle really is from our own, so I decided to make a thread to discuss WU tech, maybe even enough can be gained from this for a wiki category or two to form up. it seems to me that in WU we have 2 types of tech, "standard/actual/conventional" stuff that can be reproduced reliably and "exotic" this is stuff that comes from high level gadgeteers that are so far ahead with their tech that their stuff is incompatible with the current knowledge base, devisors that make stuff that shouldn't work but do anyways, and magic while strictly not technology, its capabilities combined with Clark's Third blur the line enough that I would, for practical purposes pair spell slips with devisor grenades.

The question I have then, is what tech is available in the WU? Mainly the "Conventional" tech, but also how they integrate with the "exotics" mainly with devise exotics as technomancy is apparently temperamental, however, I would imagine military vehicles being very modular, even with the failure potential of devises, there is a tactical advantage of using them when they work that only a fool would pass up, and same goes for magic, you don't have to know how an invisibility charm works to "see" the potential advantage.

Any Bad Ideas I have and microscene OC character stories are freely adoptable.

  • One thing we did early on in Gen 2 planning was to go through lists of technologies to determine the baseline of what was in use. We won't focus on the technology, but we will have it there in the background. We hit the areas of health care, transportation, IT, entertainment, military, personal, industrial, and other. Each one is ranked by a Tech Readiness Level which is generally summarized as:

    a) theoretical / research
    b) prototype
    c) early adopter
    d) mainstream

At some point, we may release that list of technologies. The goal is that the tech is the background to the stories, and not the story itself (except for devisor-related stories), so knowing the tech isn't key to enjoying the tales.

I have said many times if I were in the WU I would be a devisor or gadgeteer, for me the technological element is as much a part of the speculation frenzy as anything else, I like to know what makes things tick, even if they're just fictional technologies, and that background knowledge helps with extrapolation and predictions... Also technology itself can provide hints as to the backstory behind it, if its impressive enough.

Edit, as it is on a regular basis I research a rather eclectic mix of real world technologies, on a whim

  • Be prepared for the GridGear discussions then. I suspect that's going to be my GEO equivalent contribution to the Gen2 time period.
