  • Maybe I'm just being dense, but after Paradise Island is declared a sovereign nation, were they still allowing the US Armed Forces to recruit there, or where they told get the heck out?

  • The Islanders used the blowup of that revelation to extract a number of concessions from the State Department; not the least of which was recognition as a sovereign nation. And while the recruiting stations were not thrown off the island, they were a complete and dismal failure. It took the Department of Defense two years in the grand total of recruiting twelve Animen in that timeframe to realize that Lord Paramount had basically played them for fools.

    They were closed and withdrawn voluntarily by the Department of Defense.

    Meanwhile, with its attractive bonus system, custom conversion with a new body that is practically super powered, and dual citizenship that includes Paradise Island after twenty years of service, the Wallachia Special Combat Forces Regiment has no trouble meeting its recruitment goals. Despite having some of the most rigorous entry requirements of any service in any Army in the world. Ironically, because each entrant is given a new body, there are no physical or age requirements or cutoffs; it is the mind that must be honed to join the Wallachian Special Combat Forces.

    Applicants must have a bachelors degree with preference given to those with STEM degrees. To be promoted to a non-commissioned officers rank requires completion of a Masters degree, and the commission to become an officer requires a doctorate. They're informally known as the Warrior Scholars and they play a quiet role in the ongoing high-tech boom in Wallachia.

    I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.

  • Ok, I suppose this question also could pertain to Island, but Backside has a thread and Island doesn't at the moment;

    I'm unclear on where Dr DNA's lab was while he was creating the Animen; on Paradise Island, or was it some where close by like Karedonia or a ship off shore?
    Asking cause I'm thinking of sicking DeVille students on it in my Kara fic.

  • This is not well described, so Mea culpa on that. And while we think of Paradise Island is a single landmass, it's actually two islands separated by a very narrow channel of about 150 yards. All of the structures in the town on the larger of the two this is what people think of as Paradise Island. The smaller secondary landmass was where Dr. DNAs labs were, the production facility and so on. Both of these landmasses are collectively referred to and legally are the same entity known as Paradise Island. The smaller islands now has a fairly thriving port facility and there is a draw bridge that connects the two.
