    Whether the Red Brotherhood or the White Brotherhood really exists, or whether they are just a part of the line that Mephisto was running, is a question that can remain in mid-air, as it's more aesthetic that way.

    As Charles Stross put it, there are some people that wouldn't work as fictional characters, as the readers wouldn't suspend their dis-belief that far...
