  • So far, 'Shine has been able to replicate the taste of any drink he's tasted. But can he replicate more exotic effects?

Also, when you first wrote Rise 'n Shine, did you know that it would be another two years before he and Knockoff made it to campus?

  • I think he's limited to distilled liquors, not brewed or fermented.

  • 'Shine has figured out how to speed the fermentation process. It's in his story.
Brewing? Maybe - depends on how good old Gramps' spirit is...

Rise 'n Shine wrote: "If we get a tenth of the distilleries worldwide to adopt your processes," Easterbrook continued, "it'd earn you tens or even hundreds of million in direct payments, plus more than ten million a year in royalties." He grinned. "And that's just whiskey. There's a winery in California that's asked if your process would work to make brandy." He saw the puzzled look on the boy's face. "That's distilled wine."

"If'n it comes out of a still, I probably could make it," Bobby Earl said confidently.

Whether it worked or not wasn't clear, but Brandy is distilled so that bit should work, along with the aging. It wasn't clear on the initial fermenting of the wine.

  • I'll look it up later, but 'Shine made reference to 'speeding up' the fermentation process. Right now, I'm busy writing on a story.

The alcohol content in whiskies comes from the fermentation of mashed grains. Ferment fruit instead, and you have the makings of a brandy, eau de vie, or cordial. Fermented sugar cane syrup or molasses ends up as rum.

A hopped beer might be different enough to require practice, but if 'Shine can produce a good rum or brandy, wine should not be a problem.

  • There was one conspiracy theory from the 1920's, that prohibition was influenced by "Big Oil" as a way of removing a large number of their commercial competitors, who could manufacture fuel.

How well does Shine's brews work in engines?

I'd say that they blow them up real good.

  • Actually, that's a REALLY good point. 'Shine might be able to improve the efficiency of an ethanol-producing plant, making it more competitive against gasoline. And there's a lot of money on vehicle fuel out there...
It wouldn't take a very large increase in efficiency either. Down here in Brazil, ethanol prices floats according to the sugarcane season, and there are times when it's cheaper than gas (per km, I mean) and times when it's more expensive (thus the popularity of flex-fuel cars, which can use either one). Meaning that dropping the price just one or two percentage points might make ethanol more attractive year-round.
Now, I understand that the situation is quite a lot different in the U.S., where ethanol comes from corn and the energy and economic efficiency of the process is hotly contested. But again, drop a few percentage points and it could go from "debatable" to "not great, but acceptable".

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

Problem is he has to consume it. I don't think consuming jet fuel is a good idea. :)

The question here is whether 'Shine makes devisor alcohol, or he makes devises which make alcohol, or perhaps a little of both?

'Shine makes devises which make alcohol, so his alcohol would be usable in normal ways one would use ethanol. Some of his finer products - whiskeys, scotch, bourbon - have a devisor characteristic that WILL affect people like exemplars (e.g. Imp), but that's a side-effect of the process. No baseline or science can tell the difference between his finer products and comparable normal products. Imp can - 'Shine's product will get her (and other exemplars) drunk.

  • Ooh! An exclusive market for him to dominate! Because 'Shine didn't already have a bazillion dollars.

Although admittedly, the market for exemplar booze is probably pretty small.

While it may be small, I think Exemplar is one of the most common types of mutants. Now does it also work on Regens without the Exemplar trait?

Ah but could that trait be seared outside of distilling merely alcohol. If he could make medicines like pain killers for exemplars then... wow. So much moneyies he would make.

Something about this comment made me think of a filksong. - www.thefump.com/embedded_player.php?id=1305 - Perhaps this should be 'Shine's theme tune?

  • It turns out that some folks at NC State decided to look into how using an Appalachian dialect and accent can affect education. [ article ].

A side-note: 'Shine and his family are clearly written as what my grandmother would have referred to as "mountain folk" (as opposed to her own, largely"hillbilly", family living in bourbon and burley country).

  • I wonder if he's tried a cider brandy similar to Somerset cider or Calvados (or applejack, though that's usually freeze distilled which is very different). If just cider could do what this song claims, just imagine what it's like distilled:

And yeah, I know Gaelic Storm has a version of the song, too, as do several other bands; it's usually called a 'traditional', though it is only from the 1930s and the songwriter, Tadhg Jordan, has been identified . Ah, what the hell:

  • Do you think 'Shine could make scumble ?

Of course, so far he's had to taste the drinks, which is hard to do in this case. But we know it's made from apples! (Well, mostly apples)
