At the time? Anthropology. The working title for his Thesis was Shattered Genius: A Study of the Non-Magical Terrans and Their Ability to Improvise Technology Without Magic
Of course, he's broadened his outlook considerably since then.

On the other hand, they might be willing to accept that compromise if Ty West first proposed 'Humanity. Hell Yeah!' as the new title for his extended thesis.
It's like how you deal with an editor giving you grief over the use of the word 'very' in your story.
