  • I raised this topic long ago, but would like to resurrect it.
In the first Hive story, Sam is very clearly a Commander (O-5) retired. In the second he is a Rear Admiral.
    What happened?

  • If I Recall Correctly the navy promoted him/her when they attempted to reactivate his/her commission once they discovered that Sam held a working nanite hive in an attempt to gain control of the hive for the navy. The attempt was over-ruled by Mrs Carson but I'd need to re-read the story to recall how.

    John.

PS:- I do wish that Warren could manage to carry on with the Sam/Hive story, I really like the character. I think it's about time for me to start reading them again.

  • I just reread stories 1 thru 4, it was in 4 that the Navy rep showed up to recall Sam to active duty. There was no mention of Sam's being promoted.
But there was a curious anomaly, Sam said that he outranked him. Since the rep was a Vice Admiral that was very curious.
I agree with you that it would be very nice if Warren were to continue Sam's story.

  • Yeah, I caught that too. A Rear Admiral does not outrank a Vice Admiral. It's a and rather inconsequential mistake, easily rectified, but it did kinda jump out.

In any event, it was a decent story.

  • I suppose that I should apologize for the mis-spelling, but I was sure I spelled Everheart correctly. I am now even more sure, since the computer system has twice done an automatic spelling correction of Everheart to Overheat in this message.

  • It's cool. It led to a few of us at the workshop having a long and rambling conversation about nano-tech, and ways that it could work IRL.

As ever, with most gadgets and devises, it's a power problem. Storage, transmission, and dissipation. Hence the overheat.

Also, have a look at Neal Stephenson's "The Diamond Age" for another nice take on nano-tech. Some chewy ideas in there.
