  • One of my friends just emailed me to say that they got a email from the system that confused them. They applied to join the site, but apparently there's been some confusion, and they've gotten a message saying something along the lines of 'Crazy Minh, please do not create anymore accounts' or something. I think there's been a mix-up, and after my attempt to create a joke account, you've mistaken the identities of the person behind the application. If you thought it was me due to IP address, they used my desktop to create the account, so that may have been the source of the confusion.

Could you review the request and, I dunno, fix this??? Sorry, this is kinda awkward because I'm acting as a mouthpiece for someone else here, and I'm kinda unsure of how to properly phrase the request in a way that translates the angsty email I got.

...if not, is there any way they can apply again to get a account with the same email?? Their email is
Part of the message is hidden for the guests. Please log in or register to see it.
    Thanks!

  • That's automated site protection software, very commonly used to keep spammers off forums. You can't register more than one account from the same IP address. You cannot log in a given account from a certain number of IP addresses within a given time frame. You can't log in more than X times in Y amount of time. Any of these things will flip triggers that will lock out an account short term. And yes, in manual review of new applicants; we would also deny a registration using an existing IP address - which generally means someone creating multiple accounts, given that you have to use the same PC/mobile to do it... something that's pretty uncommon in these days of everyone having multiple devices capable of logging into an account.

We appreciate you bringing friends, but we'd recommend they use their own hardware to do so. Even if we override the flag to allow registration, continued use of your PC for them to log in is going to result in tripping the automated ban anyway.

  • Hmm, that probably gives a few false positives... like people behind the same NAT. I do believe we had two members living together at one time or another (even a married couple once, if memory doesn't fail me). But it's a reasonable precaution against misbehavior.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

  • Yes, it does occasionally trip on perfectly legal usage... just like the # of logins per day used to before I got it tweaked to the right values (although even still it occasionally locks someone out late in the day).
