Any way to combine or cross link the two?

    At the moment... maybe?

By default, there are almost no account associated profile data stored. I've added a separate module that gives us a more appropriate community system sort of profile form data set, but I agree that it doesn't seem to have integrated as well as you might expect. In actuality, there is also a THIRD data set that is tracked by the forums extension.

But it hasn't really been on my radar, so consider it marked down as something to look at.

  • Thanks Kirstin

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.

  • Well, I didn't find a way to easily merge them. BUT, I named them more appropriately and put both of them in the Left sidebar menu. Acceptable solution?

Overall I think it's an acceptable solution, yes. But I notice that the "Community Profile" link in the left sidebar goes directly to the edit function for the profile. Wouldn't it be better for it to go to the profile page itself instead?

  • Except there is no 'profile' page per se... just the forums with your profile at the top.

What I'm referring to seems to be a unique page within the forums though. Giving your profile information at the top, and then a list of your recent posts. There's no way to make the sidebar link to that rather than the edit page for your profile information?

  • I can... but the whole point was to put all your editing options in the same place, because the profile edits were in two different places. And who looks at their own profile but isn't doing it for editing reasons?

  • Fair enough. Guess I'm just being nit-picky...

  • Okay, just some thoughts on the newly modified "Login" box on the righthand side of the screen. This seems like the best thread to put them in since it seems to be related to the whole profile merge concept, if I'm understanding it correctly.

First, the "My page" link seems kind of odd. It just takes me to an almost entirely blank page that just shows my real name (submitted with my account settings, iirc) and a slot for a new picture that appears to be unrelated with my avatar pic on the forums themselves. So it seems to be an account page for the site overall, rather than just for the forums (which is reachable/editable through the "Community Profile" link just below). I suppose the main question I have about "My page" then is what purpose does it serve? Is it visible to others, and if it is, why does it use my actual name rather than my community handle? Will it eventually show published content, perhaps? I'm just a bit confused by it at this point.

The "My account" link seems fairly straight forward, since it takes you to a page for editing your account info. I'd probably rather it be renamed as "Edit My Account" though.

For the "Moderate comments made to my published items", I'm just curious if this is an option that every member has. Seems likely, since any member can create/publish blog posts, but I'd just like clarification on that.

The "Community Profile" link is pretty straightforward as well, just like "My account". Again the only thing I might suggest here is to change the name, perhaps to "Edit Community Profile".

"Create Content" is obvious. No questions on that one.

Hope I'm not being too much of a bother with this...

  • I can close the site while I make changes to prevent confusing people if I have to. I'd rather not. I'm trying to clean up some major issues by implementing some new extensions and that results in side effects and things that I have to test. Or is the fact that you have a 'my page' button that leads to nothing especially useful so disturbing to you that I should just remove the extension that I'm implementing to solve the problem with authors being unable to edit their own articles in the site front end... its not like we NEED to have editing abilities as authors, right? I can just promote every author who wanders on to the site to editorial status where they can edit every story ever posted. That makes sense, doesn't it?

    ...
Why am I so upset about this? You posted on the thing less than a half hour after I installed it. I barely had the module installed in the right place yet. Let alone properly set up. And you're already critiquing it.

Yeesh, I'm sorry I said anything then. I didn't realize it was THAT new. For all I knew it had been posted earlier in the day. And it wasn't meant to be a complaint or critique at all, I was just looking for clarification about what was intended. (Okay, so the suggestions for re-naming links could be taken as critiquing, but I kind of thought that was the point of the suggestion box thread.)

So yeah, I'm sorry for just trying to understand how the changes to the site are progressing and for having a vested interest in how well it turns out. Guess I'll just keep my thoughts and suggestions to myself from now on then.

  • Would everyone just calm down? Kristin is putting in one hell of a lot of UNPAID effort to give us this gift of a site. Take a moment or two or a dozen and please word your comments carefully. THis is not aimed at any one particular person, but the group in general. Think about how YOU would take comments if you were a) working a day job, b) trying to get the site running with worthwhille extensions, c) paying attention the forums,, d) getting stories ready to post weekly, and e) (in your spare milliseconds) doing what you love, which is write stories like the rest of us get to do.

Kristin is doing a thankless job. Please take a moment and appreciate that before you criticize. When you do, please think. Before you say "this sucks", maybe ask a questions - "Is this new? I don't understand what it's for." Give Kristin a break, please. She deserves it.

(Actually, if I ever won a lottery, there are some Gen 1people who'd get a nice gift for all the hard work they've done. And that still wouldn't be enough. Sometimes we disagree, but I love them like family.)
