  • I'm not sure how much control the Admin have over the ads that appear on this site, but is there any way to maybe do away with the one that have sound? I usually work with the sound off, but I share a computer and some times people forget to mute after they've been listening to music or what ever and...

  • I'll check, but I don't think that's a filter option that I have available to me.

  • Nope... sorry... if they happen to come from just one or two sources, I can lock out just those ads; but I don't have way to lock out ads with sound. Closest thing I could do would be to lock out ads with video as opposed to flash/still images.

  • I don't think I've seen an ad with sound.

I do have a slightly different question though. How are the ads picked? About 80% of the ads I see make sense, they are sites I shop from, or have visited, but some of the time they are for things I am completely uninterested in, or seem completely random. Like the "Women from (wherever) want to date you," or some metal top company, D-Con (although I guess it is getting into mouse season), Internet providers I can't do business with and the one I do business with, and a bunch of others.

  • I haven't noticed any ads with sound. On occasion I'll get a horizontal ad in the side bars, but those typically go away when I refresh.

I've been getting a lot of Barnes and Noble ads lately. But I consider that to be a good thing, since I like Barnes and Noble.

  • if you have tracking cookies on your system, that will influence googles ad selection (ie if I search for something on Amazon and then log in here, I almost certainly will see Amazon ads for things related to what I was looking for). the content of the page you are viewing can impact the ad selection. (so a forums thread talking about Ram pickup trucks might see truck ads). Other than that, its almost random... depends on time of day, who has ad campaigns that target our class of site, etc. I can turn on/off certain markets/industries, but the more you filter the more you get repeat ads ... and repeat ads don't pay as well. For a little while, our traffic and forums conversations and new (reposted) content was building fast enough that we were seeing some higher value ad campaigns... but that has dropped off with the slow summer traffic... we're getting the 'cheap' ads most of the time now.

  • Even if you are blocking cookies (or even if you have just cleaned up your cookies/ nuked your browsers profile/ reinstalled your machine), ads are not totally random; there's still some info that Google can get from your connection in order to direct ads -- your geographical location, for starters, and quite likely your language preferences. For instance, I see mostly ads for Brazilian companies, which makes sense, since I'm in Brazil.

  • Yeah, I see a lot of repeated ads, even multiple copies on the same page. I do though, when I remember, click through the ads from here when I shop at some of the places that regularly have ads.

Partially I was curious if the site propagated ads from user to user. So if were Googling D-Con that would mean that others would start seeing D-Con ads.

  • No, there shouldn't be any carry over from visitor to visitor except where the ad relates to the content on the site itself.
