  • I don't know if you have come across a Chinese Maker called Naomi Wu, https://twitter.com/RealSexyCyborg/

She was on the cover of Make magazine, talking about what it's really like in Shenzhen.

She had had a run-in with one of the founders of Make, and after a lot of argument, he apologised for his sexist behaviour by featuring her, and all of the other chinese makers that she recommended.

Her problem now is Vice magazine. They contacted her about an interview, and before the interview took place, she specifically set out some topics that were off-limits for them to ask about. This was partly about her personal life, but also covered questions about politics and feminism. From Naomi's point-of-view, this was entirely to do with her personal safety, as there are publicly-taboo topics in mainland China, especially when communicating with the Western Media.

The journalist, and the editors from Vice, agreed to the terms, signed a contract to that effect, and then asked the questions anyway, then published the article, including mentioning the taboo topics.

Thankfully it's being seen internally to China, as another example of "This is why you can't trust the West!"

The problems really started when she started to talk about getting legal representation, and threatening to sue Vice. https://twitter.com/RealSexyCyborg/status/990397202374713344

The lawyers from Vice shut down her Youtube channel and when they spoke to Patreon, Patreon closed her account. No court order needed.

When faced with a not-even-credible threat, Patreon folded like a wet sponge.

This is a problem when we use Patreon to fund this website.

I've been looking for alternatives for myself, and some other artists i know,, and i'll point Kristen at them when i find one that works.

If someone knows alternatives that i haven't come across, i'd be grateful if they could post them here.

  • I don't see how that situation makes Patreon any more or less reliable than anyone else. First, it would require us to be big enough that magazines with lawyers would bother to interview us. Second, it would require us to be stupid and trust entertainment media to stick to topics that they said they were going to ask about instead of ones we set as 'off limit'. Third, we'd have to allow them to go ahead and ask taboo questions and be foolish enough to trust them to keep that information off the records. Fourth, once the magazine ran its articles we would have to be foolish enough to complain about it publicly and then post details about individuals / employees of that magazine that would allow our fans to go after the magazine and journalists/editors involved.

Patreon 'could' have fought on her side... after all, they're pretty serious about their privacy laws. It's one of the things that will very quickly get your account closed with them. And that was the whole point of her case with Vice... that they violated her privacy. So, in theory, Patreon was on her side. Up until the point where she posted a video with a Vice employee's home address/contact information. At that point, Patreon had no choice but to act. They didn't cave, she shot herself in the foot.

Fate guard you and grant you a Light to brighten your Way.
