  • This is a bit of a strange request...oh wait, should probably say hi.

Hey guys, I'm back! Well, sort of. I've managed to find a job working at a friend's startup somewhere out west, and so far that job looks stable. I'll post the full story later on the Quad, since this is a suggestion post, not a update on my life.

Anyway, I've found that- especially with massive, massive, massive stories like Dianne Castle's Ayla and the Tests that it becomes hard to remember at a glance which part contains what. To clarify, when I look at the list of stories on a given page, it becomes very hard to identify which particular story I was up to the previous night, especially if I closed my browser window. There are two possible solutions to this.

I am not going to say the solutions are easy, because I know they are not. I am not going to say that they are achievable, because I myself have no idea if they even are within the confines of Joomla. I also only know a spattering of PHP, and not nearly enough to code it myself. I also have little-to-no experience with Joomla, as my last venture into using it was nearly six or seven years ago during a workshop on website development coding.

Anyway, there are two possible ways to solve this. Both include adding a short synopsis to the canon stories page. This can be achieved by either expanding the story info box to include a synopsis (thereby increasing the number of pages, and reducing the number of stories on each page); or by creating a 'mouse-over' pop-up with a short synopsis attached. This is kinda impractical though due to the number of stories on this site. A solution to this is to get fan-submitted synopsis's, and then attach them to each story. This would minimise the work via the outsourcing of the story-reading and synopsis-writing to a group other than the site staff.

  • You can find a synopsis, part by part and a direct link to the stories on the Wiki. Also a calandar of what happened when and a list of characters featured or mentioned.

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.

Caveat - for MOST of the stories, a synopsis exists on the Wiki. Our dedicated, hard-working, underpaid, overworked volunteers who maintain the page haven't necessarily gotten all the synopses done. It's not because they're slackers, which they definitely are not, or that they're unmotivated, which the definitely are not - it's simply because the volume of work on Whateley is rather large. As in enormous. Gigantic. Mammoth. Freakin' Huge.

But you will find MOST of what you're looking for there. I must add that the wiki, maintained by volunteers, is a vital resource to us authors, in that keeping track of all that's been written and developed would be an overwhelming task without the Wiki.

  • There are actually blurbs (jacket text) in existence for many of the stories... created back when we were releasing stories in larger chunks less often/regularly. The same blurb was typically used for all the parts (so that wouldn't necessarily help with knowing something like 'in which part of the 20+ parts of a certain Ayla story did Ayla taste test cake for the chefs' but it would give you something to tell the different stories apart.

Summaries specifically on the site... are possible. Giving you visible access to them would take revision of most of the story related layouts and, ironically, would mostly be useless for the purpose you're thinking... because for you to GET the summary for the story you're looking for, you'd already have to have FOUND it. And the Summary data is not one of the fields that can be indexed for the search engine... not easily, anyway.

I have to agree that the WIKI is probably the best resource available for this sort of thing. It's designed for that sort of hypermarked data, with reasonably easy to use search engine (and server power to handle it) and possibly the most important factor, it is set up for crowdsourced data entry. There are ways for me to open things up for volunteer help here... but open access to that level of data would leave us vulnerable to people manipulating (and potentially destroying) the stories themselves. And that's not something I'm willing to risk... even if I keep solid regular backups.
