  • I was just looking Glow in the Dark by Morpheus again and was wondering if it would be reasonable for Whateley to have a summer program for people who need some help preparing for their life as a mutant but wouldn't otherwise be appropriate for high school environment. Glow/Rachael/James might be appropriate for such a program even though he is a little too old to attend high school. It would provide an opportunity for some team-ups that wouldn't occur otherwise.

  • They do have a summer program. Some kids, after all, have no home to go to... the whole reason they are at Whateley is because the place where they grew up is unsafe for them.

But WA doesn't need to provide a summer "learn how to use and control your powers" program. These already exist. From small local law enforcement run to community colleges or regional supergroups... there are groups in place. Remember, while being a mutant and manifesting power as a teen is a new and growing source of being paranormal... they aren't the only paranormals in the WU. It's just that 'most' of those other paranormals are not kids. And adults are expected to be able to make their own arrangements for learning about a newly acquired power... and they don't generally have to worry about their new power getting in the way of the basics of growing up and getting a functional education so they can be reasonably adjusted adults. That's what WA is for...

  • I also remember one of Those Who Do Not Exist saying that some of the 'thornies that can leave their rooms choose not to go home because of the high amount of green-flag days and a lot of those who bully the GSD students tend to not be around to bully them.

  • The real question is if there's a WA backed curriculum for the supergroups, law enforcement and colleges.

As for team up opportunities, A parent looks after their kid, they want them to have social growth, but are in a pretty socially damning situation, what do they do? They reach out to find other kids in the same sort of situation, and try to arrange them to meet. From what I understand, this is fairly common when families are homeschooling, and there are even groups of families that home school their kids together, is it really that much of a stretch to think that Ginormous wouldn't do the same for Rachael? This would open up team up opportunities for a "not in Whateley" group.

  • I want you to think about what you just implied...

"We're Whateley Academy, the foremost boarding school for teens manifesting mutant powers. We protect your kids at our hidden campus in the White Mountains of New Hampshire using magick, advanced technology, and quiet word of mouth referral to ensure no one is certain we exist. We exist outside US sovereignty on native lands to keep the government from manipulating our policy and count both A list heroes and villains as alumni and protector's of the school's neutrality. Now you to can learn how to control your mutant powers, from the quiet comfort of your basement plasma beam testing range... using the Whateley Academy mutant testing starters kit; you can prepare your own MID paperwork for submission to the MCO. Once you've completed your testing program, you can choose from any one of these At Home Powers Program Kits: Exemplar, PK, Energizer, Devisor, or Warper. Inside, you will find power theory and technique training videos that, with 15 minutes each day, will turn you into the next A-list hero or villain. And if you act now, you can get one of several Supplemental Training Kits as a free bonus gift: Costume Design, Syndicate Henchman Training, and Civilian Work for the Paranormal - our awards winning program pairing up the advantages of certain power techniques with career fields looking for the best employees they can find.

Please note that the Mage Power Program Kit is only available with the sealed approval of a Master Mage, in agreement with the Assembly of Mage Masters and Apprentices.

Whateley Academy - now the best kept secret for mutants everywhere is there for YOU."

  • I like the option of Whateley approved curriculums for other organizations. After reading the other comments, I realize that there would be two big problems with bringing in people who are from outside or older: preserving neutrality and maintaining security. However, having training materials and seminars for others, perhaps in cooperation with the Arkham Research Consortium, would produce a world of possibilities. If seminars were held off campus, a few students might go along to help organize things. Possible types of degrees where this might take place would include Law, MBA, Medical School, Social Work, and religious seminaries.

Dealing with family (not in the Bianca Family way) who have Dedrick's Syndrome, GSD, or other life changing problems.

Legal rights of mutants and other legal issues for extreme technology.

Legal considerations for devisors, gadgeteers, other mutants, and mages. (If you create a new life form, what are your responsibilities. Legal guidelines for disputes between mutants and/or mages. If your supercomputer, AI, or artificial organism develops an invention, who has the rights and how should it be patented.)

Religious freedom and the Church of Cthulu.

Reducing tensions between mutants, baselines, and mages.

I also suspect that the DPA would generate pamphlets about mutants with input from Whateley organization. (I don't know if Kellith's little book would be suitable for general distribution.)

  • As we have said... numerous times... there are other organizations who provide programs, including major colleges. And books written by people affiliated with Whateley out there on regular bookshelves. Whateley isn't needed to be the public face of paranormal education... even for teens. Whateley serves its purpose best hidden from public view. If at some point Whateley becomes public (even if the campus location itself remains hidden), it will very significantly change the landscape of paranormal politics for the WU.

  • To be honest, of the Organisations most likely to do things like what is being suggested, ARC is the more likely.

It's a global Organisation with many links to the various Super Hero groups and government agencies, it's not trying to hide, it's not trying to be neutral, and it is interested in studying unusual cases and objects, and it works closely with Whateley as the senior partner (Whateley goes to them for help).

If there is an organisation that is working to standardise testing, researchers studying how to better train powers, one that has the contacts to effect change and distribute information, ARC stands out, it is after all a research organisation with countrywide and worldwide Officiers and contacts.

If you need a Whateley Universe Organisation for your story to run a Summer School, an ARC run Summer Camp in association with a big name Super Team, or group of them (say the 'Crusaders' who to do franchises) seems the more likely scenario.

Anyone now imagining Sunny taking Natch to a typical Summer Camp for 'gifted' children where Sunny is mentoring and teaching while making sure that Natch gets her annual allotment of "fun, excitement and general wholesome memories"? Or am I the only cruel one who would think up something like that?

  • Pretty sure Nacht would just disappear into a portal of darkness, and then seal said portal to ward off Moly bombs.

  • From the stories, Natch seems to end up always doing what Sunny wants her to do. Sunny definitly has all the 'mother' hooks into Natch and isn't afraid to pull them.

  • Also, Natch Does Protest Too Much. I think she actually likes doing the stuff with Sunny, but keeps a sarcastic armor around her. Sunny sees through it... and so does Jadis.
