It covers the first two or three story links of the Latest Articles panel on a very few screen sizes and font zoom settings... which in most cases can be solved by changing to landscape orientation on your device or adjusting your screen position through zooming (in/out). And the Latest Articles panel is not the only way to get to the stories. New G2 stories can be found in the category list following Menus via Stories->2nd Gen Canon, for example.
I've adjusted the side panel banner ads to use responsive settings (screen size, orientation, etc)... which helps people with small screens a fair amount, but there is no option for a responsive 'wide' style ad. I'd have to go down to a fairly small ad to work on ALL screens. It's simply not worth the hit to ad revenue.
Of course, we could always talk about ad-free subscription accounts...

I like the banner ads, they're great. Although some of them seem to be a bit odd.
