Question DC readers could you explain something?

  • Regarding the Martian Manhunter; Is there something about Earth that lets him have his powers, or would he have them on Mars, or does it vary by writer? Asking cause I was watching Supergirl and went "Ok what is the point of a fence if those you're trying to round up can fly?"

I am a caffeine heathen; I prefer the waters of the mountain over the juice of the bean. Keep the Dews coming and no one will be hurt.

  • I don't know much, I only saw the Martian Manhunter in the Justice League cartoon, but I do believe that he could still do all that back on Mars, with nothing holding him back.

  • AFAIK, J'onnz' entire race had the same abilities as his, back on Male'candra (Mars). So it has nothing to do with his having moved to Earth, like, say, a certain Kal-El, or Daxamites.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

  • My understanding, which could be drastically wrong, is that Jonn J'onzz's 'powers' are more like skills; any martian could learn them, if they had the teacher, the time, the resources or the discipline; analagous to either magic or Ki skills. So the Manhunter is a remarkable person, even by 'Martian' standards. So, in that light, he's more like Batman than Superman.

  • Not true all Martians (Green and White and yes they are entirely different species), inherently possess all the powers Martian Manhunter does. They are variously skilled and talented with each aspect of what they can do, but all Martians are capable of using all powers available to them at some "base" level, though the Green Martians (of which J'onn is one) are peaceful philosophers and the White Martians (M'gann M'orzz and Till'All) are warlike brutes. Also All Martians possess a paralyzing, genetically induced, fear of fire. Such that they literally shut down all non-autonomic function when exposed to open flame, because the Guardians of Oa are alternately massive cowards and massive dicks. Also, why bother with the flying when J'onn can phase through solid matter, and psychic manipulation (another Martian thing) is one of the few things that can affect a yellow sun empowered Kryptonian?
