I have been re-reading the archives in haphazard fashion, and found an inconsistency that really bugs me, concerning Mr. Charlie Lodgeman and Sara Waite. Note, I don't know how to do quotes, so I will just paraphrase.
In Heyoka's introduction to the school, Mr. Lodgeman specifically introduces Jamie to Sara. In IP4 he tells the good reverend that once Sara leaves the school it is open season on her.
These two actions, to me are in complete opposition to one another. Now I understand that it was two different main authors, but if Lodgeman was so dead set against Sara he would have never put Jamie in her sphere of influence.
Just wondering if anyone has a possible explanation for this little oddity. Anywise, have fun all.

My assumption has been that he is only pretending to be against Sara for the sake of not alienating Englund -- Englund had very few remaining allies by that point, which is a very volatile situation with a guy like him. He's a crusader; people like that need to have moderating influences in their lives or they'll eventually go completely off the rails. By pretending to be on the same side, Lodgeman can stay in the loop with Englund and help to keep him under control. Advising Englund to just wait until she graduates, for example, buys Sara a few years to build up strength as well as time to potentially alter Englund's opinion of her. And staying on Englund's "good" side means that Lodgeman's more able to notice when Englund might be up to something that could actually endanger Sara or the school, allowing him to undermine those efforts.
Also, it's worth pointing out that Lodgeman didn't actually introduce Jamie to Sara. Mrs. Horton did that, and then Hank. Lodgeman's involvement happened later after one of Jamie's fights, by which point Sara was already interested in Jamie and asking a bunch of questions. Lodgeman was friendly toward Sara and answered those questions, but also specifically told her that Jamie needs friends more than lovers. He then asked Sara to try to be the good friend Jamie needed. So if you want to take the Lodgeman-is-anti-Sara view, that conversation could be interpreted as him realizing that it was already too late to keep Jamie and Sara apart and settling for damage control instead.

Also, it's possible that Lodgeman's opinion of Sara has changed over time. I don't remember the timing or details of any of their interactions, or when various information about Sara has gone public (or semi-public anyways) so I have no idea how likely that is, but it is something to consider.

just re read the relevant points, and yes i was incorrect in who introduced who, and in continuity... Heyoka arrived 3 or 4 days after the Halloween mess. I am going to guess that the lack of info in "Eating Dog" is because IP4 waas released quite a bit later than Heyoka's stories. Still, the incongruity of Lodgeman's actions is very jarring. I know it can be explained fairly easily, but that is how it feels to me.

When you stop to consider how many different authors have written the first gen stories, and over such a long period of time, it is little wonder that there are a few inconsistences between stories. Indeed, it could be argued, that it is a triumph of organisation that there are so few points of such conflict especially when some of the story arcs literally took years to complete!
I've seen more continuity failures in book series by published authors, who are being paid to get things right, than we routinely find in these Whateley stories which are being written by a bunch of enthusiasts.
John.

Remember that from Kayda's info on Sara and Gothmog, they are "neutrals." So it is likely that Lodgeman sees them the same way. Whereas the ultraChristian Englaeiou(y)nd sees them as "evil" because of all the sex and corruption.

Ya. Mistakes. We generally just admit to them and own them... we rarely go back and try to retcon/fix them. Though, sometimes things that people THINK are errors are actually not... there's a lot of flawed narrator going on around here. Which is about what you should expect when you use teens in the high school drama sort of setting as protagonist, point of view. But sure, there are errors. Diane actually patched a number of holes when she wrote the 'catch up' Ayla stories... but there are things written before that couldn't be solved via Ayla presence and things after that don't benefit from Diane being around that still are 'rough edges' if not serious 'trip hazards'.
But compared to a multi-season television show or movie series? Our continuity 'score' is pretty damn good.

like the title says, it doesn't really matter. It was just something that was harshing my understanding of Lodgeman's personality, and thought it would make for a good discussion.
Kristen, This world you all created and shared with us is awesome in so many ways it is ridiculous. All the authors do an amazing bit of creation, and I hope the muses let you keep sharing this world with us.Thank you.
