  • I stumbled across this Google Maps for the Whateley Universe, which lists important locations mentioned in the stories. Anyone know who created it?

  • I don't recall it entirely, but I think it might be the work of Sir Lee? I remember discussion about the matter amongst the talk of the floorplan of Poe and other cottages, as well as the campus map itself - all on the old forum, sadly.

It seems at least pseudo-official, as Kristin deigned to add it to the site: whateleyacademy.net/index.php/google-map...he-whateley-universe

Seriously, thank you for your time and effort. It is appreciated.

  • seems a bit off in some specifics though.

leaving whately you turn left to get to Dunwich, right to go the 50 miles to Berlin. So Dunwich would need to be north of where the campus is located if Berlin is south. I think a better fit would be the town of Stark, even has a covered bridge between the 2 locations.
( from several stories, mostly in the Sara/Arc story arc. )

The campus would likely be closer to the lake ( the pond near it ) to fit with one story, though origin stories do specify that the campus is not on a lake or river/stream, just near them. ( Tennyo going fishing near the campus [ 1/2 mile away ] not on it )

  • It was me, Although, I must say that it has been a while since I updated it.

A while back we were looking into migrating the data into the Maps feature of Wikia, so it would become part of the Wiki, but stumbled into a few annoyances:
    1. No known way to simply import it from a Google KMZ/KML file -- so it would have do be done by hand.
    2. Less flexible in spots.
    3. More importantly, Wikia Maps appears to be a MediaWiki extension that's not available to wikis hosted elsewhere. So, in the event that we decided to bring the wiki to whateleyacademy.net (for instance, to be able to use a different license), the maps would be lost.

OTOH, Google Maps is not really made for collaboration. I can give edit permissions for individual people, but it lacks protections against vandalism. So out of necessity I have to be choosy on who I give edit permission. I would like to have more people adding to it, but the long and short of it is that if you aren't rather well established in the forums, it's simply too risky. Top contributors to the wiki and canon authors are prime candidates, naturally, as are some of the more active forum members. But so far, nobody asked.

  • Dawnfire: Actually, for a long time I used Stark as a likely expy for Dunwich. However, there was some Word of God that implied that it was somewhere more easterly, and closer to Berlin. So I had to change it.
There is some discrepancies regarding the lakes, too. But I think it's not unreasonable to assume that local features such as lakes are a bit different in the Whateley universe. I mean, all those Class X entities underground must have distorted the relief somewhat.

  • yeah, I looked at the region before in a map and it's hard to pinpoint any WU specifics like Dunwich.

maybe the campus is to far north for a good appearance for the layout.

I went through things a while back... never was able to wrap-up a finalized map but no positioning is going to fit all of the stories... the inner area of the campus with all the major buildings and features talked about is about 1/2 mile-square and then you've got some distance to the walls and where everything fits into the mountainous area around where the reservation would be located... if you look at current maps a few of the roads would be moved or removed and towns such as Stark may not even be there in the Whateley Universe... essentially, real-world maps will give you a good idea but aren't gonna be exactly accurate. The only things sure to be present are Whateley, Berlin and Dunwich.

Remember, in the Whateley Universe we've got class-x entities calling this region home, er... prison, um... feeding ground?... you get the picture. Either they would keep people away or people who know about them would steer people away... or to them.

  • There are ways for us to tie in Joomla to a Google maps API with the API running specifically on our virtual server, which would allow us to use joomla access control to determine who can modify the map data... supposedly. I have not spent any time with that other than noting that it is possible...

IF enough people are interested and want to run with it, I can spend some time figuring out just how its done and what's possible with it. But if its just going to be like the shoutbox... something I spent time and money on and then no one was interested in using it... I'd rather not. When Sir Lee and I talked about the map when I set up the site and no one showed any real interest, I set this one aside too.

I'm willing to spend time and support anything that people will make use of... I just don't have the time to add things just because one or two people think it'd be awesome to have and then even they don't use it...

Fate guard you and grant you a Light to brighten your Way.

  • I don't see the point of investing the time right now. If there are people interested in contributing to the map, right now I can give them permission in a case-by-case basis. If this does not work in the long run, we can revisit the topic at a future time.
