  • Are you messin with the site again? Not sure i'm liking having to sort through drop down menus just to navigate through the forums. If it's a glitch then.Glad i could bring it to your attention. TTFN!

  • Yeah. What's happening on my end. As soon as i hit the forum button it sends me to a drop down menu in the upper left. With 3 links below it. Each link is for a seperate area. So it forces me to hit one of the bottom links first. Then i have to use the drop down menu to sort through and find where i want to go. Obviously i figured out the new system. But meh...I think the old ways were just fine. I could see new posts a lot faster at a glance without going through the extra steps.

  • Are you using any tool that might be interfering with the normal working of the site? Things like ad blockers, script blockers such as NoScript, or the SmartHTTPS Firefox extension? (I gave up on SmartHTTPS because it kept attempting to load BigCloset and some other sites in HTTPS... and then the site came all broken, requiring me to manually reload it as HTTP *every time*)

Not me. And I'm having the same issue. As soon as the site loads up, I can see the threads for a fraction of a second, before they disappear, and I get only 'Crystal Hall', 'Feedback/discussion' and 'Independent Fiction: Tunnels'.

For a moment, I was lost, I thought I'd lost all the threads. Using Google Chrome, and no, I don't believe I have any add-ons.

Here's how it looks like when I go to the main page:

  • A good idea in general when a website starts behaving strangely is to hold down Shift and hit Reload, which forces the browser to load the page without using the cache. That was what I had to do today to get things working again.

  • Shift + reload seemed to work. We'll see if it holds. And in response to Sir Lee. I havn't changed anything in/on my browser in months. So i don't think that's part of the issue. I just think Kristin tripped the hamsters and something broke. 8P

  • Yeah. Shift + Reload did it for me too. I tried reloading the page again, and it was still there. Odd though.

We might not be the only ones affected though.

  • The reason you needed to reload was because I ran a patch on the forums software last night. This makes changes to the PHP and CSS and a number of other things related to the forums. By default, your browser will load a new version of the page you are directly loading if its different from the last time you loaded it... but most browsers pull linked files (graphics, CSS, JS, and so on) from cache. So the patch changed some things that your browser loaded fresh... and some things your browser didn't. The two don't work together right and it generates a page that has stuff on it that is unexpected (remember, every 'page' you come to on this site is generated uniquely for you, every time you go to a new page - there is NO static html at all).

So yes... first thing to check if something isn't working... is to reload. If you have reloaded and still have problems, then its probably worth reporting.

In this particular case, the only thing that I *THINK* has changed visibly is the quoting system. Which has been changed significantly in ways I do not like... but were SO significant, the hour I spent trying to recreate the old ones last night accomplished almost nothing. I'll try to figure it out tonight... but it might have to wait until tomorrow when I have more time.

  • Note... if you get what is shown in Yolanda's image... hover your mouse over the area about 90-95% across the screen in a horizontal line from the category heading. Just 'inside' the middle section, before you get to the sidebar. There are buttons with an X in them there that let you turn on/off whether you see the sub-categories within the section of a forums. It looks like one of the things that is getting lost by the system is the default - visible details... and the categories are being hidden. Clicking on that X button will make those sections visible again.

  • I found the fix for the quote boxes... I think. There might still be something funky going on with fonts on quotes, but at least the stacking colored frames give clarity to where quotes begin and end.

Additionally, there have been some nice little updates to the JCE editor for those of you who have author access. It doesn't ALL work as desired yet... but having the option to view an article in Preview mode (which should apply the correct CSS to it instead of showing it in some 'other' combination of styles) will be nice.

  • Note that you may have to force-reload (Shift-reload, Shift-F5, I don't really remember the combo for Macs) to actually see the latest fixes. Yeah, the colored frame for the quotes helps a lot. But, you know... I'm not surprised that the user community is in dissatisfied about this latest update to the forum engine. I mean, moving the "User X wrote" string to the beginning of the quoted paragraph, with no formatting at all? What were they thinking? Have these developers ever actually USED a forum?

  • I think they are trying to make it look more like social media feeds... *shrug* but they also changed a lot of the underlying code for things too, supposed to be a lot more secure now. I'll be poking around on it to see if there's anything else we can benefit from...

  • Well so far the first reload has held. I've been back several times since then and everything is working normal. But that's good to know. I've never had to do a forced reload so it was a good learning experience.

Specifically the last few released ones, the two Aurora ones and my library one and a few other random ones I can't remember

  • Its a window resolution thing. If there is enough space to fit the options in the Forum menu bar then they appear left to right. If not then you get the dropdown version instead. I tend to zoom my web pages in, on account of poor eyesight, so I usually get the dropdown version. But if Izoom out a few times, it reversts to showing all the menus in the bar.

  • Something strange is going on - I was rereading Riddle of Sappho to make sure I had important details for Kayda 10, and in all of those stories, when they are displayed, everything above the tag labeled hr id="system-readmore" is NOT displayed, which includes the title and a few introductory paragraphs. In other stories, this is not an issue. A forced page reload is not clearing this up. Canto III, IV, and VI have that issue; Canto V does not. Odds and Ends has the same 'readmore' tag, and it doesn't display this issue.

    Most peculiar.

  • Hi Elrod,

I've been the one putting the readmore tags into the stories.

I noticed that Canto IV I put the readmore tag in a div, so I moved it out, please let me know if that fixed the isssue.

  • Nope. I tried editing out the readmore tag, and it displayed fine. Don't know what's going on.
It affects Canto I, II, III, and VI too. Only Canto IV is okay; the others chop off above the readmore tag.

  • Open in Chrome - no problem.
    Open in Firefox? problem

I've been opening them from both the story link page in the Wiki and also from the Original Timeline page. Same results.

I'd prefer not to use Chrome, too - I don't like a monster company that already has too much of my private data and browsing info...

  • I'll take a look. It may be the use of divisions vs paragraphs in the stories, or it's possible that something changed in the CSS that impacts one browser and not others. I try to keep them consistent, but some things aren't obvious.

  • I've looked at things in Firefox and am not seeing what you are, El. Maybe its because something has already been done that has changed them... but... conceptually, there shouldn't be any impact.

See... the readmore feature is not set up to do anything at all when you visit the story's full page/article... which pulling it out of the original timeline list should do. The only time its designed to have an effect is when we have a page in 'blog' format like what you see when you click the Main Menu button for Stories but do not select a specific category list. On THAT page, you get a blog layout of the most recent stories released... but to keep those pages from being ridiculously long, the 'readmore' tag breaks off the story and provides links to the rest of the story at the point in which it was tagged.

The ideal use of this would be to include the header info (category, title, author and part/chapter) plus a blurb/jacket text. Alternately, instead of a blurb, a one paragraph 'story thus far'. Then the readmore tag and after that, start the actual story. But I don't always have the time or creative energy to create good blurbs even for the front page news let alone for good story jackets... so the bulk of stories don't actually have blurb (and a lot of the blurbs that were on the old site didn't get transferred)

Anyway... outside of that blog layout? It shouldn't do anything. Which is why I'm a little confused about the observation that you're seeing things missing as a result. It's not supposed to do that, especially not where you are seeing it happen. And I'm not personally seeing it on either Chrome or Firefox... so... weird.
