  • If you haven't read any of them, i can thoroughly recommend these books.

It starts off as a cross between HP Lovecraft, and Le Carre, and goes seriously sideways from there. There's a slight touch of a Grim MeatHook Future, especially when it starts moving towards the latest of the novels, but they are definitely worth reading.

Underlying theme, is that Magic Works, But...

The existential Platonic reality actually exists, but it acts as a conduit between different universes, which means that any "Sufficiently Advanced Mathematics is identical to Magic", which is ok when you know what you are doing, but unfortunate when you don't.

This is how the initial main character, Bob Howard, got drafted into the department of the British Civil Service that deals with this sort of thing. He nearly flattens his university town with the magical equivalent of a nuke by accident, so he got drafted.

It starts from there, and goes in all kinds of directions.

I finished reading the latest book at 7am on Boxing Day morning.

Book 6, "The Annihilation Score" is directly relevant to this website, whilst book 7, "The Nightmare Stacks" would fit very nicely with the thread discussing Nikki.

Definitely more Lovecraftian than here, but worth reading nonetheless.

Book 8 has just gone to the publishers, for a June release date. Put my pre-order in already. :D

  • Yes, this is an excellent series. I sometimes describe it as "Lovecraft meets The Office", although Lovecraft and Le Carre is the more accurate description. Magic is a branch of applied mathematics,

There are a couple of short stories you can read without concern for spoilers: Overtime , a lovely Christmas story; Down on the Farm ; and Equoid , which as the second most horrifying unicorn story I have ever read is considerably more... icky... than the main series. Which is not to say that the main series doesn't have it's fair share of horror (It is Lovecraft inspired, after all), but Equoid requires a stronger stomach.
