  • Anyone here know how to use GIMP? What I want to do is to take a drawing I have, detect the edges and lines and make it into a 'toon'. Then I can color fill to make it what I want. But my GIMP skills are so rusty that it'd be like relearning, and I'm looking for a shortcut (so I can spend my time writing instead).

  • Wish I could help, but I'm not at all familiar with GIMP myself. I've heard of it and have friends that swear by it, but I've never personally used it, since paint.net works just fine for the little bit of image/photo editing I enjoy doing.

  • I just checked and my install, with all known scripts and plugins, doesn't have an edge finder.

  • Actually it does have an edge-detect feature . It's on the "Filters" menu.

If you want to convert it into a vector image, however, Gimp is not the tool for it. You might want to try Inkscape, which is also libre software, comes with a trace feature (not the greatest, but it might suffice for you) and is a vector-oriented program.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

  • I can try to see if I can. I have not worked with them much. I mainly work with jaw, jpg and png. I have Adobe Photoshop, so I do not see a reason it should not be able to, as I know it is an option to save as.
