So, I'm finally back. Where have I been? Moving house. For over two months? Well, sort of.
I was previously living in a rented maisonette, but the lease period ended a week before Completion on where I am now, my first owned (well, mortgaged) house. So, over the course of January, I steadily moved all my clutter over to mum's (at her encouragement, my computer was one of the first to be transported), then over the first week in February, steadily moved it to my new house.
Despite promising my phone and broadband order (same supplier as before, ordinary ADSL) would both be ready by the day after Completion, my router couldn't connect and still wouldn't by the following weekend. So I raise an online support request, to be told that the broadband order failed, they'd resubmit it, and everything should be back within 4 working days.
Still no joy by the following weekend, so I decided to phone them. Cue a merry half hour listening to seriously dodgy quality on hold music (interrupted every minute by the obligatory thank you for holding, your call is important to them but all their support assistants are busy [although evidently calls to their customer services line aren't considered important enough to hire enough call centre staff...] ), then after explaining my issue, spend another half hour as they transfer me to another department (grrr!) who tell me it failed as they detected a partially active service on the line - so they'd get that cancelled (5 working days) then put my service into place.
However, their online update stated 27th Feb, so I submitted another update asking why the discrepancy. Eventually I'm given a definite date of 3rd March, when the line finally does become active.
By then, I was spending most evenings stripping the wallpaper from the lounge - that was the easy bit. On two walls, the lining paper also came off easily, but on the remaining two walls, it was attached with the adhesive from hell - in the end I gave up and just sanded the walls as smooth as possible, hoping the difference wouldn't be so noticeable after several coats of paint (mercifully the underlying plaster was in decent condition, so no need to replaster or fiddle around putting fresh lining paper up).
So now I finally have broadband service, and am alternating between further decoration and catching up on 2 months' worth of updates to the two dozen or so webcomics I'm subscribed to... not to mention Whateley updates
Hopefully by Easter I'll be able to resume updating the Wiki's various Lists of Canon Stories - as I've said before, if anyone's sufficiently familiar with the Wiki to step in and add the episodes I've missed (you'll even find the Javascript word count code in one of the Talk pages), I'd be grateful - after all, Wikis are supposed to be collaborative efforts, without anyone having a monopoly on page edits. Just because I've done 99% of List updates, doesn't mean I should have to do all of them

I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than to those attending too small a degree of it.

Welcome back. Sounds like you found my internet company there; if so, run far far away.

Ironically, they're called PlusNet, owned by BT and run as their cheap 'n' cheerful ISP (so actively practice and openly admit to traffic shaping), and somehow manage to keep winning customer service awards (presumably not to customers moving home though...)
I've taken to satirically calling them MinusNet...
However, moving to another ISP now would be expensive, as in moving me, they put me on a new 2 year contract, so cancelling would currently cost over £200, while I'm currently paying £10pcm for the broadband (for those interested, 5.5 Mbps downstream, 0.75 Mbps upstream) and £17pcm for line rental for the associated phone line (with evening and weekend inclusive calls package).
Meanwhile, on other matters, I'll think twice before stripping wallpaper - which, in this place, is always the textured paintable stuff - currently painted various shades of yellow, but evidently was red in the past judging by the bits of wall where I've removed bits of coax terminating equipment from an old fibre installation (from a company which went defunct over a decade ago as it merged with its rival and became Virgin Media) that ran in trunking on top of the skirting (well, 2" x 1/4" planks rather than dedicated skirting boards).
