  • One of the earliest XKCD strips.

I've sometimes wondered - is the Donner Party as universally known elsewhere as it is in California? Because you'd be hard pressed to find native Californian over the age of 10 who hasn't heard of them, but as far as history goes they aren't really much more than a morbid side note.

Oh, yeah, and congrats on the positive review!

  • I think I saw a reference once related to a version of the Oregon Trail game... but growing up in western PA, it wasn't part of our history programs. Funny... I was having this discussion with one of our board members on opening night at the reception after the show. He also is originally from PA. He remembers learning about it at some point though, college maybe. I was never a big fan of history classes though, so it might just have been me not paying attention instead of a curriculum issue. I think I spent most of my junior year American history class designing and writing backstory for my first full scale RPG.

  • It's something (side note: while I have lived in CA, I didn't ever go to school) I picked up in American History in Japan, but that was an 'additional' reading topic, only done if you were trying to pass the entrance exams for Tokyo Uni, or just really liked the subject.

  • I would say that, globally speaking, "Alive" (you know, the story of the Uruguayan rugby team that survived an air crash in the Andes) is much better known.

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

  • It was part of my education, but exactly when I can't say. This was during the '70s, and it would have been part of the whole perils of westward expansion. Oddly other things such as the Mountain Meadows massacre and to be fair Mormon war in Illinois weren't covered.

What is covered in History Class seems kind of hit or miss.

  • It was not a topic covered in school up north, but canabalism is one of those 'nay nay' topics, it was hinted that some pacific coast First Nations 'imbibed' also.
Monty Python often mentioned the British Navy having a problem along those lines.

  • It was covered, but I don't recall if it was a footnote on several history classes or something from popular media. I received schooling in both Texas and Missouri.

In the end reality is only consensual! It means that Al Gore is causing "Global Warming" by his rhetoric alone! Fortunately, there are enough Global Warming "Deniers" still about to keep him from boiling the planet.
