Question something wrong with the site

  • There seems to be some sort of a glitch in the site. Only gets noticed if you try to use the back button on the browser. It is constantly reloading the page so that if you right click on your button all you see is an endless stream of the page in the history.

    Annoying, but not serious.

  • Seems to be working fine for me.

It helps to tell Kristin what browser, OS, etc. so she has an easier time figuring things out.

I'm using mozzilla firefox. Not seeing this anywhere else

Like I said. It's not actually destructive. But it is a glitch of some sort. And if you don't notice that the page keeps reloading itself you would not even know it was going on. You only see it when you try to use the back button, or check your browsing history. And then see an unending stream of the page you are on.

Funny, if you use one of the navigation buttons to go to a new section, all those history listings vanish.

  • The back button on a browser hasn't been a valid method of navigating web pages for more than a decade. It is especially invalid in circumstances where there is data entered in order to navigate to or generate the resulting page... or where the page calling the new page matters in how the page is generated or called. It doesn't surprise me that this site glitches following using the back button. My recommendation on handing it is to not use your back button. It's why there are menus on every page.

Also, you will find that the page continually loading will tend to occur with certain combinations of Google ads. As these ads are among those that pay the most for the privilege of being on our site... I'm going to have to say they get to go ahead and keep doing their always loading thing. Is it a pain? Yes. But not enough of a pain for me to pay for the difference out of pocket. Convince me that the money is available for an ad-free site and that it will continue to come in for the long term... and I'll remove the ads.

can't argue with your points. Was just worried it might be a sign of some deeper fault. Knowing the explanation eases my 'OC' reaction.

Really? I use the back button constantly. Sure, there are times when it's problematic, but I don't find that to be the case in the majority of the sites I browse.

  • Of course not. The back button is just as invalid as carrying a pocket knife. Inappropriate in a few specific situations, but unless you happen to spend most of your time in a courthouse / submitting form data, it's not a problem the bulk of the time.

  • It's ironic that you're arguing the point... in a forums. ;)

  • If I am not replying to a thread, I use the back button to return from whence I came.

  • Myself, I prefer opening each thread in a new tab. That way, I don't have to wait for the original page to reload. Granted, it doesn't update the "read" status of the threads, but I think I can keep that information straight in my head for a few minutes...

  • I might be jinxing it, but the issue seems to have vanished.

It was never serious. But my OCD means that it was an itch I could not scratch. So glad it seems to have resolved itself. Or rather that you have resolved it due to something you did for some other reason.

  • I'm going to chalk it up to browser-Joomla interactions and one or the other did something in an update to fix it and considered it unimportant enough to even mention in detailed patch notes. *shrugs* certainly wasn't anything I fixed... I didn't even know where to look :)
