  • This is not so much about Tennyo, though it is, as about the orientation the incoming freshman are getting in regards to her.

Unless something has changed she is still under rule 33? meaning any attack on her, or instigation of someone else to attack her, is automatic suspension.

Now there have been a few cameos of her in some of the new stories, but mostly a character just noticing her in passing. More a call out to the readers than anything to do with the story.

But I'm thinking that when you enter a school like Whateley one of the things you are informed of as soon as possible are expulsion levels violations. Beyond the normal ones you'd find anywhere.

As well as lethal warnings of places like the Grove, which they do seem to have been informed of.

It seems lacking that they were not given information on Billy, and the consequences of unilaterally attacking her. Along with a picture so they can't claim they didn't' know it was her. This would lead to her drawing a lot more attention from Freshman than the sort she has been getting. As in not just cross the street to walk on the other side, as to cross the whole campus to give her lots of room.

Now having said that. The reason why they have not done so is that they trust Billy to ignore, or moderate her response, in the face of any attempt to pick a fight, or even an outright attack. After all it's not like they could really do her much harm.

The reason they do this is to avoid terrorizing all the new students by avoiding mentioning that the girl they might pass in the hallway, or share a dorm with, could go toe to toe with Godzilla, and give him a handicap.

another reason might be to avoid giving motivation to the idiot/s, who would not be able to resist.

Maybe when a student shows he, or she, is the sort to be a problem they could be shown a video of her combat final, and the information on the rule. Up till then it's not really needed.

  • You haven't seen this in a year 2 story because we are mostly trying to avoid showing you the week one orientation things six times.... because, after all, we DID show it to you from a half dozen different perspectives in year one. For year two, we're focusing more on the 'getting acclimated with being at a school with a bunch of people who have similar crap going on with their lives.' Team Kimba didn't really do that because they were all changlings and clicked together as a group right away.

That said... orientation does cover such things as not setting off ragers and what it means if you purposely harass or pick a fight with certain groups of people. You just didn't see it on-camera.

That makes sense, but if that were the case I'd expect to see a few weird reactions to Billy from time to time. But I realize if you tried to include every possible contingency in the stories they'd be nothing but info dumps.

  • Redoing orientation is nice once in a while though, especially for characters with larger arcs over the longer term, because it provides a good jumping in point for new readers.

11 million words is nice, but that's also a bit of a deterrent as much as it is an enticement.

The canon cabal tends to mesh things in really nicely, often in an understated way, like Imp learning about the school in general and how not to trigger the ragers on campus. Or Kayda having all her issues when she first arrived. It comes out organically.

So don't avoid it just because the veteran readers have seen it a dozen times. If it makes sense to bring it up, it can be a good place for new readers to start with before diving into the full set. You provided us a recommended reading order section, give us opportunities to fill it out. :)

  • At first I thought that you meant Tennyo's sexual orientation, which I had made atopic about, speculating on if she were asexual or not. But yeah, I'm sure there was an "If you see a blue spikey haired anime girl, do not attack her- for she contains anti-mater and could leave Whateley a crater" speech somewhere along the line.

Just as each dorm has its own personality, each likely handles freshman orientation differently.

Twain freshmen might be warned about "crazy Poesies" up-front, starting with Chaka ("... beat the snot out of Monty AND then survived him taking a cheap shot at her. By the way: don't pull that crap. Ever.") and Tennyo ("a walking, talking nuclear bomb. Plus, she dated Jericho. 'nuff said.")

Hawthorne? "All detainees and visitors are expected to evacuate if there's an incident, unless named in the response protocols. They're all in Poe, by the way. Tennyo can handle just about any physical threat, but then she's a Section 33 and almost got moved here anyway. Expect Phase to stick his nose in whatever happens, but he's Puppet's cousin ferchrissakes. And so forth. Until you're in better shape, just listen to Mrs. Cantrell, Foob, and the RAs..."

  • It's all in the student packet -- you know, in the addendum to the Rules and Regulations handbook. What? You didn't read it? DESPITE the very big red blurb on the cover, saying "INFORMATION ESSENTIAL TO YOUR SURVIVAL"?

Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.
