I've liked everything I've read by Ryk Spoor, now he's heading into Whateley territory with a tale of a regular guy who gets tapped to take on the mantle of a Magical girl.

  • A magical girl fighting GOOs no less, if I read that synopsis correctly.

  • And vaguely familiar. While Kittyhawk certainly doesn't have a monopoly on this idea - there have been earlier examples of it - the fact that SGVY has been directly ripped off on at least one occasion by a (live-action) Japanese television series makes me wonder how popular her work is in Japan.

Ryk Spoor is not shy about co-opting characters from other series.

In his Grand Central Arena stories he has a character who was created, in universe, as an amalgam of several characters from the EE Doc Smith stories. He also used a variation of the Monkey King in the Grand Central Arena series
Then there is a female character that was ripped from Sluggy Freelance. Oasis. That one had to be with permission. It's not the first time Baen has used character's from that web strip. Bun Bun showed up as a character in an Eric Flint series.

So there is no telling where he might have drawn this character from. All I know is that from past experience it will be a real fun read. I hope it's the first in a series. As he has a penchant for those and does not do to many one shots.

  • Baen.com now has the advanced reader copy of this available for those who just can't wait and have e-readers.

Another one to look forward to if you have the same reading habits as I do is the new Vlad Taltos Book coming in October
