"My Immortal" is perhaps the most infamous piece of fanfiction in history, eclipsing even the original fanfic versions of The Journal Entries and Fifty Shades of Grey (though unlike those, so far Rowling hasn't threatened to sue her over it...). Tara Gilesbie makes Stephanie Meyer look like Shakespeare. "The Eye of Argon" is brilliant writing in comparison. I'd quote H.L. Mencken's quip about Warren Harding's prose (which to be fair was genuinely wretched) , but MI is all awful, with nothing approaching grandeur.

So naturally enough, it is one of most popular subjects of YouTube Dramatic Readings . It is painful to try to read, but listening to someone else reading it out loud, with the sort of bombast normally associated with Brian Blessed! auditioning for the role of Baron Vladimir Hardchargin in an off-Broadway musical production of National Lampoon's Doon ? Comedy gold.

Seriously, Gilesbie is fanfic's answer to Byron Hall , just with horrid spelling, purple descriptions of goth styles, and men with uteruses, rather than anal circumference elasticity check tables, rape fantasies in the rulebook, and 10d100/5-1 stat rolls in character creation. MacLennan's description of Hall's abomination as being like "hitting your nutsack with a tack hammer, for about four hours" is just as apt here.



This video describes F.A.T.A.L. as being suitable as "a punishment for war crimes" and calls it "a kidney stone made of active thermite", asserting that trying to use the rule system is "like sucking the pus out of a botfly infection". Again, I can certainly see MI as being at the same level as that.


I'd compare "My Immortal" to Ride to Hell: Retribution 1%, as well, but honestly even that disaster isn't on this level of putrescence. And seriously, just being able favorably compare RtH to just about anything is noteworthy, because, holy fuck, have you seen any clips of the women-as-trophies, Team America: World Police-esque sex scenes in that abortion? They paid people to make that. Yet it is a work of genius compared to "My Immortal".
