Feel free to discuss any typical forums accepted topic here, Whateley or otherwise. Let's avoid the usual suspects: politics, religion, and so forth that tend to result in flame wars and angered forums readers. Other topics will be considered fair game unless they prove to be too volatile, at which point we'll use Devisor created anti-flame chemicals on the subject.

This far. No further.
They've taken too much ground. They've corrupted a monument that has stood for 50 long years. They've desecrated a icon of popular culture....make that two...sorry three...four...many icons of popular culture. They're going to make a melodramatic, teen-romance version of my favourite show. Let's save Star Trek from itself.
I know not everyone dislikes the abomination that is STD. It seems that it was not a revival, but a vandalisation of one of the most iconic TV shows of the past fifty years. I was OK when they were only interested in ONE TV. Maybe it would go on for a few painful years, and then be forgotten. But no. There are FOUR new TV shows, all being produced and showrun by the guy who wrote the third-worst Star Trek movie of all time (ST Into Darkness), one of them being directed by the guy who did Vampire Academy (the show is going to based around Starfleet academy. They're defiling the best space school in sci fi now. Bastards!!!), and another featuring a return of Picard. Predicting terrible writing just designed to draw fans in and milk them for money.
But I'm not going to take it any more. In the words of 30 seconds to mars:
It's the moment of truth, it's the moment to lie
The moment to live and the moment to die
The moment to fight
The moment to fight
So, get onto twitter, and retweet the following. Let's kill these new shows and the abomination that is STD before it can get off the ground:

Don't be mad!!
But I cannot find it somewhat ironic that this is mentioned in Whateley Academy, where discrimination, suppression and being hunt down happen so often.
Of course, when the science fiction being produced is the reflection of our current reality, we're in a dark place. I mean, the latest release notification I had in my inbox was called Extinction.

I accept that Star Trek was destroyed in a Red Matter explosion long ago. But IMO, it's not something to get upset or angry about to this degree. If you don't like it, ignore it. We will never get back to the Thinking Man's Star Trek... Where we had intelligent, thought provoking episodes like "Far beyond the Stars", "Let that be your Last Battlefield", and "The Inner Light".

At least TOS and TNG aren't being revived as Steven Universe-style animation projects.

Personally.. I look at this like computer gaming, comic book movies, fantasy movies, and so on. These things were at one point, decades ago, niche genres. They appealed to a small audience, they had very little support financially or from mainstream markets and while the ratio of 'pretty good' to 'barely acceptable' tended to lean towards pretty good... let's face it, it wasn't because there wasn't drek being produced... it was because the production pipeline was so bottlenecked by analysts saying "there just isn't enough interest, we can only make this much sell in a season"
There's a lot less of a bottleneck now over genre. In fact, so many things are being produced simultaneously that the actual bottleneck tends to be complexity / quality. Smart takes better writers. Deep takes better actors and more integration of subjects. Impressive spectacle takes actual artists. And smart, quality films don't inherently sell better, because unlike genre oriented audiences... 'smart' / 'critical' people are actually limited. Genre crossovers and spill out happen.. Spiderman can be comics and adventure and romance and coming of age... and appeal to a variety of people instead of just comic geeks. A smart, deep movie? The moment people feel its 'above' them, they'll start looking for ways to tear it down.
SO if you are backing projects... and you have the ability to support ten projects that aren't much more than fluff pieces but will sell simply because they're from a genre that has fans that will see everything in that genre even if they don't like it? Or you can back one project that might get you huge returns in the same time? Well... they're investors. Fuck the smart movie that may or may not make it. Guaranteed paydays 10 times over? Gonna top quality every time.

I'm with the let-it-go crowd. There is enough hate in the world as it is. No need to stir up more over a dumb TV show. Go listen to some
Psychostick
to get it out of your system, then grab some
Voltaire
to replace it with love.

IMO, don't worry about it, and just watch The Orville and accept the inherent absurdity that exists within the whole ST concept, while also enjoying a loving homage to the franchise.
