Ok, several things happened last night here in Oz:
- This site went down for several hours. I couldn't access it, and nothing was working.
- I found www.whateleyacademy.org . Yeah. A website for the fictional school. What the everloving fuck does that site exist for?
- Sorry E.E. and wiki editors, but in a desperate attempt to contact anyone, I put a message on the front page of the wiki. I'll clean that off later.
this raises a few questions:
- the fuck was going on with the site last night?
- the fuck is a website for a certain fictional school doing at that address (and incomplete at that).
- the hell doesn't this site have a status page and/or emergency helpdesk/contact page?

I'm not entirely sure, I'm waiting for Kristin's report, but it seems there was some sort of problem with the payment for hosting and Google (the host) suspended the site.CrazyMinh wrote: - the fuck was going on with the site last night?
Yeah, we know about that. It was made by a fan years ago, and sorta abandoned (except that they keep paying for the domain registration and hosting). I believe Kristin was negotiating to take over the domain name at least.[/quote]CrazyMinh wrote: -- the fuck is a website for a certain fictional school doing at that address (and incomplete at that).
There is a status page. Kristin has mentioned it several times in the past. You can reach it in whateleystatus.wisdomsprice.com/ or status.whateleyacademy.netCrazyMinh wrote: -- the hell doesn't this site have a status page and/or emergency helpdesk/contact page?

A website on the internet had a few hours of downtime? This is unprecedented! Never before has a software error or outdated payment information resulted in a popular website experiencing a brief outage. Never! Somebody contact the UN! We need plans and assurances that this will never happen again! We need committees! We need focus groups! We need justice, dammit!

well... first of all, the site DOES have a off-location status page. you can get to it at
status.whateleyacademy.net
... its hosted off my google domain instead of the site server, so it is almost guaranteed to be accessible, even if the site itself it not available. There was a time, several years ago, when the status page was common knowledge... because between hackers and lack of admin support and other issues, we were down almost as often as we were up. But since I've been running the site on a virtual server in the Joomla format, we have only had two down time - one for about six hours, one for three... both of which were associated with software updates that went awry and required time and effort to restore from. 9 hours of downtime total in almost three years of continuous operation is... pretty good. Also... I specifically don't have my email address plastered on the site for contact purposes because I DON'T intend to cater to every little request that people want to put in lap because they want something done differently or can't figure something out. That's what the suggestions part of the forums is for. For emergencies.. there IS a Site Contact thread stickied in the Announcements/News forum that let's you know how to reach me. But if you think about it... for times when things are down, neither a forums post or contact buttons matter... because "things are down" means you can't use either anyway. So like almost every site in existance, if its actually down, there's no accessible way to contact the admin anyway. My alternate site status things works around that, but only if you know it exists beforehand.
Second, There is no full time admin staff. The site being inaccessible for a couple hours is worth noting, but NOT panic worthy. Even if someone happened to try to log in the moment a problem happened, emailed me and I happened to be awake and at my desk with time to work on it... a solution could be hours off. But more likely, if someone had to email me to let me know there is a problem, I'm working and its going to be anywhere from 4-10 hours before I'll even sit down at a computer to start solving the problem. Bigcloset asks for 3-5k dollars in donation support in addition to ad revenue and book sales, etc to have 24/7 technical support / admin / moderation. This site runs off less than $400 / month in Patreon to cover virtual server, domain, software... all costs. I'm willing to quit my 'day job' and do nothing but run and improve the site but that's going to take more than $400 / month.
Third.. the whateleyacademy.org thing was bit of joke from the early days. it never got taken down and the owner does't really follow the site anymore so....
Finally... what happened last night was that the domain names were supposed to autorenew. For whatever reason, they did not and I had an email in my inbox this morning saying so, that required me to manually click a web site button to approve the charge. During however many hours it was from the time of expiraton to when I clicked Approve, we were accessible via IP address only.

Even calling up the site by IP didn't work much better this morning, as it routed to an error page (Google's own routing timed out 9 hops on a traceroute), but with the date being so close the start of the fiscal year, along with billing cycles: not a huge deal.
Besides, if an actively-maintained but understaffed site IS down, the admin is the one person who probably doesn't need the interruptions.

Now that Kristen has reminded us of the status page, don't deface the wiki. It probably surely makes Sir Lee sad.
I will admit that I was a bit worried that all the recent talk of Those Who Shall Not Be Named brought them back lurking from the shadows to DDoS the site, but then realized it was the beginning of the month, so these things happen.

Yeah, I did panic a bit more than I should have. It was unexpected, and I have issues with unexpected things...so...yeah...
...Damm, I did cuss a bit more than I should have. I don't mean to be rude. Here in Oz it's a bit more...usual...for frequent profanity...to be banded around in polite company. I mean, it's not really acceptable as per se, but it's more of a thing here. Guess it comes from Australia's penal colony origins.
In any case, it's good to know there's a status page. I'm sorry for sounding really pissed everyone (especially Kristin). It was a complete overreaction, and I have no excuse...other than the fact was that it was 12:00 in the morning, and I couldn't sleep due to the bloody weather being way too hot for this time of year. I mean, it should be spring right now, but we've got temperatures that should be in earl summer!!! Plus, it keeps bloody alternating between hot and cold, and it's really throwing off my sleep patterns for whatever reason. So, with the sweat combined with the still-strong smell of fresh paint in my apartment, I went to log onto the site to do some reading. My sleep-deprived reasoning was that it would be better than rolling in bed trying to get to sleep. Surprise, the site was down, and I went from 'well, that's not a option' to 'oh shit the sites down what the fuck is going on help help help' in a complete and utter overreaction. Thusly, I spent the better part of the night panicking, looking frantically for a way to access the site or contact the admins, and thus only woke up a few times today, before getting up for good at noon. Thankfully, I still have sick leave due to a nasty infection I have on my foot (won't go into the details to spare your ears- and your sanity), and thus didn't get sacked or- worse.
Wow. This has really turned into a small rant/ramble. Shit, I really over-explain things, don't I?
...god, now I know why my friends avoid saying anything when I start raving about bloody Scomo...shit, none of you know who Scomo is, do you?
...I'm going to shut up now. I adamantly refuse to cross the boundary into forbidden subjects. At least here, where I have a chance of being kicked out the metaphorical door, and the quite physical site access list.

Consider that I have been telling my friends "Vote Voldemort -- Why Settle for the Lesser Evil?" in the upcoming Brazilian elections... yeah, things are looking quite grim here.

Downside to an automated domain name renewal not happening is that you don't even know it didn't renew until it fails. I got all the email that said it would be renewing. It happens the same time every year. And then the email saying it was no longer active came in after probably a half day of it being inactive. Instead of in the middle of the night when it 'ended'. And then, even though I manually paid (via my phone even) as soon as I got the mail... it was still after my phone had been off for a couple hours to avoid interruptions during a performance. Who knows how long after that the site was actually accessible again... because of propagation...

Why not a 'Vote Judge Cal - the Lesser of Two Evils'...
...actually, that describes a certain backbencher pretty well. He'd play the fiddle as Canberra burned to the ground. If you didn't click on the link, I can tell you his name sounds like 'Phony Rabbit' and he's the closest we Aussies have gotten to Mr. Toupee-and-suntan.

Are you kidding, we're actually nearing the one political topic that we all agree on. That Cthulu would make a better political figure than anyone currently in office.
But you are right, we do need to keep the politics sidelined, please.

All Hail president Thullu. But really it's pretty bad the world over for politics. I mean some of them are the lesser evils such as the Goofy Orange President (GOP) but really I haven't seen anyone yet in decades I would trust /sigh.
And Minh remember "when in danger or in doubt run in circles scream and shout" hehehe.

Only 9 hours downtime in 3 years is a very big THANK YOU to Kristen, especially if it costs only a fraction that big sites cost.

Hmmm...well, we've had one great- but short-lived- prime minister over the last six years here in , and I know that the US has had at least two extremely great presidents in the last 60 odd years...
...one last thing before going off topic: Anyone noticed how frequently we Aussies replace PM's???
...A standard term is 4 years....
...We've had six different (well, Rudd took two terms, but that's beside the point) Prime Ministers over the last SIX YEARS, something that should- in any normal world- have taken 24 years to accompish. We've been swapping out leaders faster than I swap out batteries in my torch. I haven't changed the battery for that for at least three years, and it's still working perfectly. In that time, we've had three 1/2 politicians come into the revolving door of leadership, and get quickly and firmly booted out.
...Damm, we Aussies are crazy...at least you Americans...oh wait....

You guys aren't as wonky as the Italians. My advisor once commented (as we were flying to Italy for a conference) that Italy spent more time WITHOUT a government since WW II than they have WITH one.
Guess they really got the bureaucracy down pat to be able to run without politicians ...

I think its more that they just don't have any functional infrastructure... so they don't need government agencies to run anything. And where they do, the Church just pushes for things to happen.

Meh, that's one political point of view. I'm sure that she has as many supporters as detractors. It's a democracy, it's sorta expected that there won't be unanimity. And these days, it's not just a matter of different interpretation of the facts -- it's hard to even get both sides to agree about what the cold facts are.
And, frankly... your buddy Klaus seems to have a penchant for hyperbole. Because... really?
(Note to self: research how come that "parable/parabola", "hyperbole" and "ellipsis/ellipse" ended up both in my Geometry and Language textbooks as technical terms...)
