    Dear god why???

...I wake up every day, and feel like life is a nightmare. I can't imagine what it is like in the US given the present...political situation...but when I see things like this, I feel a little more dead inside.

Anyone else get that feeling from anything else???

As long as M. Night Shyamalan isn't directing, how bad can it be?

  • Sword Art Online. THAT's why.

Even in ANIME form, it's a example of bad writing made popular. The characters are pretty 1D, the bloody author is anything BUT consistent, and the protagonist Kirito is about the edgiest edgelord with the most OPAF Gary-stuness I have ever seen in Anime. Well, maybe not the MOST, but he's up there.

Then there's the rape scenes. Including two or three tentacle ones, one PARTICULARLY creepy one at the end of the second half of the first season, and another one crossed with a unwilling murder attempt at the end of the GGO arc. Oh, and then there's the female characters with hardly any clothes on, and the plain boring visual designs and the badly choreographed fights (for the most part- there were some good ones).

Then there's the dialogue, which feels stilted in parts, and downright dull in others. Then there's the cafe exposition scenes littered throughout the show. Then there's the terrible In-universe game design of SAO, ALO, and GGO. Let's not forget the Harem-that's-not-really-a-harem-as-such that follows Kirito around like dejected sex puppies.

The only GOOD SAO was the Abridged series which has (and continues to) do better that the actual series, and the GGO spinoff: which was written by a different author entirely.

...and it's going to be made live action. Look how well that turned out for FMA, Death Note and pretty much every other anime made Live Action.

I think we need to expose Minh to Heavy Metal(1981)

  • I don't see how that anthology relates to SAO. I rather liked it, though it did get weird. I liked how all the stories were connected in one way or another, though if you take hem out of context it can get really weird really quickly.

  • It's got live-action and rotoscope, plenty of 1D characters, blood, gore, and scantily-clad women ( although I'd recommend the temple scene in the Taarna story for anyone needing an example of "nude" vs. "naked". )

You seemed triggered by these sorts of things in SAO, even though very solid works have included them.

Now, if the announcement was for an all-female casting of SAO along the lines of the critically acclaimed Ghostbusters(2016) I might be a little more sympathetic.

    Altered carbon.

    ...

I've read the book that inspired it. Let's just say the sex scene counter was significantly lower in the first two instalments than in the first five episodes of the TV show.

Oh, and then there's the fact that I found myself shouting:

Whenever the plot froze up for longer than a TRS-80. I mean, goddam. They spend FIVE EPISODES doing the equivelant of spending a entire in-game year of Fallout 4 doing side quests and avoiding looking for your missing son. He literally focused on anything BUT doing what he'd been spun up to do, and had at least three or four orgasms while doing it. Now that's a image.

  • well, it's not Death Note 2: Electric Boogaloo.

Who knows, they might re-work it and make it better? so far the only animation to Live action redo that I can think of as being better than the original is Blood: The Last Vampire, but you never know...

  • Why because they think it will sell. All we can hope is that someone who has actually played MMO's gets a chance to rework the script a little. I was quite convinced that the biggest thing wrong with that show is that the underlying game kind of sucks.

  • I think we all need to just accept that television scripts are not written for anyone with any literary standards. It doesn't matter if the original source was dead center in your interests or not. The television version will not be targeted to your niche interests. Why? Because niche interests don't sell commercials... and commercials pay for the development of television shows. Period.

Film is focused on making money... because it is actually an investment process these days. People put large sums of money into the production of a film to get a return on it. Not to create a good movie... but to MAKE MONEY.

As long as you continue to view these things as if they are intended to reproduce your original story or comic book/manga sourced ideas with any level of quality or integrity; you are going to be dissatisfied.

  • Netflix doesn't have commercials, this should change the equation somewhat.

  • You might think so, yes? But not really.

Broadcast TV works like this: "We want to sell ads for lots of money. To do that, we have to attract a lot of viewers. To do that, we have to have a product with wide appeal, not a a niche-catering product."

Netflix works like this: "We want to sell lots of subscriptions. To do that, we have to have lots of desirable content that attracts subscribers. Best possible content is exclusive, so they can't get it elsewhere, and with a wide appeal, so we get a lot of subscribers for each dollar spent."

So both broadcast and Netflix will always aim towards the widest possible appeal. It's better for Netflix to have a single series that attracts 100 million subscribers than 10 series that attract 10 million subscribers each -- because then they have spent less money, and can spend the savings on a second 100-million-subscribers series.
