Any impressions on the new show.
I'm watching the first episode now, and I'm already shipping Adora and Catra, even though the trailer indicates they end up on opposite sides.

She sleeps on the foot of Adora's bed for heaven's sake.

I haven't seen the episode yet, but I fully intend to support the show.
Because it looks interesting from the trailers and indicates they attempt to subvert at least some of the tried female protagonist in animation tropes.
And of course there is the added bonus of thumbing my nose at the sad spectacle of overweight and past middle age angry jacks having a collective internet meltdown (complete with slinging homophobic and transphobic slurs like it is still 1850) because the lead character is not the barbie doll in a 1950s swimsuit they remember panting after when they were teenagers ...

When the best thing that fans can come up with is underage lesbian shipping and a power fantasy of enraging overweight and middle-aged men, it's not even worth pirating. 1/5
The previews lost me at princess on a flying rainbow unicorn in a world of pastels as depicted by the Steven Universe crew.

The flying unicorn is actually sort of a running gag. He was just a regular horse, that Adora named Horsey. She did not have much imagination at the time. A magical accident turned him into the flying unicorn.
He does not talk. At least not yet. The obligatory crazy old lady informed Adora that he was not impressed with the name Horsey and his real name was Swiftwing.
I like the fact that She-Ra is huge. The transformation adds a couple of feet? to Adora's body. The most mentioned height is eight feet, but that might be a bit of hyperbole, but she is for sure a lot larger.
I was amused that the closest thing to a skimpy outfit is worn by the one male protagonist, Bow, who wears a crop top. All the girls are well covered up.
I think they made a mistake if they were aiming at a young girl demographic, in not giving She-ra more of a bust line. Little girls who dream about transforming into a mature adult lady want to see that bust line. Or so I'm guessing.
There is at least one princess who seems to have a serious crush on She-ra.
The first season is one big origin as they set the stage. for the main plot lines. Or so it looks to me.

In some screen captures she does look very boyish, but she is supposed to be an army leader and then an action hero, so I think a thinner athletic look fits. One pair of YT reviewers mentioned that their own daughter preferred the 1980s episodes they'd picked up to compare the new series against. So, yeah.
A practical problem with that is that if the network doesn't hit big with the target audience, it may be hard to find funding for improving writing and animation.

One good thing about Netflix animation, so far, is that they don't seem so quick on the trigger to cancel animation based on things like toy sales. Voltron is going into something like its seventh season and I haven't noticed a lot of Voltron toys out there. ^_^ This might be the only season, but while the second season has not yet been confirmed the writers say there have been four thirteen-episode seasons scripted.
By the way, just as an aside, Netflix also just came out with a new series. "Super Drags." the title says it all. Very campy looking show where three drag queens are given super powers.
