So, the fourth episode of The Orville's second season came out nearly two weeks ago now, and man was it was it awesome. It was kinda like the movie Enemy Mine in places, but funnily enough, it also did STD better than STD. Let me explain, with some spoilers. I'm not going to hide this, and I'll try and keep the spoilers as limited as possible. In any case, it's funny enough that to hide it would ruin the point of this post. Actually, on second thought I'll use no reference to the episode.
So, Ed falls in love with a crewman with the last name Tyler. Michael RestingBitchFace also falls in love with a crewman named Tyler. Both Tylers turn out to be aliens in disguise as humans, both enemies of the other's faction. Except Seth somehow managed to do the STD 'Ash Tyler is a Klingon' better than STD ever did, and almost no-one outside Reddit saw it coming. I kinda got a inkling early on in the episode, but that was mainly due to me seeing where the writers were going.
I have a funny feeling that Macfarlane was making a statement about how The Orville can do Trek better than Pseudotrek, seeing as Season 2 of STD debuted the same night (exactly a hour before The Orville S2E04 in the US!) as this episode. The irony that the show that all the critics hated two years ago is now doing the same subplot that STD did better than that show that the critcs loved all that time ago is just so fucking funny. Even better is that STD is now trying to steal The Orville's audience by placing their timeslot so close!

Posts like this make me not want to come to The Quad anymore. So many random posts from CrazyMinh with few responses. Your angry rants are killing the joy of this place. Please take it down a notch.

While I am of the opinion that the last -good- Star Trek series was DS9, and the last good movie was First Contact, I do give them credit for trying. My issue is that Enterprise and Discovery made the cardinal mistakes of " what came before"... and when you are out of ideas, you get the Suliban, The Temporal cold war, The Klingon War that is never referred to in TOS, and the "shroom drive".
I do applaud them for the attempt, but up the quality. Instead of omg insta-warp to anywhere using spores, make up a more feasible-sounding technology. like quantum entanglement drive, or some other tech-speak reason that sounds more plausible. At least they gave a plausible reason for why it couldn't be used anymore. It's a pity that they keep going back to the well of "before", because there are entire other eras that could be explored. What about the time between Kirk and Picard? I know the Stewart series will address the stuff after the ends of TNG/DS9/Voyager, and hopefully we get answers to the unanswered questions from those series.
As for the issues with Minh, not everything needs a hammer. Even the topic title is hammering your opinion. calling it "STD", compares it to a disease. Sure, you might not like it. but bashing everything doesn't open up dialogue, or discussion. It just makes one look at the topic, shake their head and say "oh gawd", and proceed to the next topic.
You might not like something, you might outright hate it. But a topic that is one-sided with "HATEHATEHATE" doesn't open up discussion.

There's a rumor going around that Seth originally pitched a Star Trek series to CBS, and when they turned him down he turned that pitch into The Orville.
CBS also turned down a pitch from Jonathon Frakes and William Shattner. Hence, I suspect, why Frakes is directing The Orville episodes. (Besides being a good director of course)
The real pity is that down here in Oz, the Star Trek shows are on a streaming service, The Orville is on free to air, and my internet sucks.

There's nothing odd about Frakes directing Orville episodes. The press and some segments of fandom try to make up rivalries where there isn't any. Well, there might be some legal issues being discussed among the lawyers of the right holders, but the people actually involved in the creation of the shows for the most part don't care. Consider Babylon 5 x Deep Space Nine. There were some accusations tossed around, but that didn't keep Majel Roddenberry from appearing on B5. It's a good gig, the pay is good, you do it.
Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

Whilst you're basically right there Sir Lee, there is an element of trying to lock people to one franchise or another.

Sydneysider myself, haven't been down to Victoria in a long time. Last time I went more than a couple of kilometers south, it was a trip with mates to Tassie. Spent a weekend in Hobart sightseeing. Last time I went down there was back around 2006, when I was in Melbourne at my late godfather's wedding. Poor guy died a little while back in a fall.
