  • For those of us who have a lot of free time on their hands (or a very wierd working schedule), the quarantine means time to pursue the art of being a couch potato. This state of being is one of a great hunger for entertainment to distract from the monotony of sitting on your ass doing essentially nothing. Thus, I declare a thread for reccomending any non-Whateley media to pass the time.

    • Battlestar Galactica (2004) (TV series (2 feature-length pilot episodes + four seasons, one spinoff series, a additional episode for S2, and a additional web series); Avaliable in the US for free on SciFy’s website. Avaliable elsewhere on DVD and BluRay) A thrilling tale of the last 50,000 humans fleeing the irradiated ruins of their homes, while being pursued by a foe of their own creation. Struggling with limited supplies, impostors, sabotuers, as well as political bickering; their only defence is a aging military ship, and a squadron of worn-out starfighters.
    • the Mass Effect trilogy (video games; avaliable on PC, XBOX, & PS4): In the 22nd Century, humanity is part of a intergalactic community. Using a technology that manipulates the mass of objects, starships can travel the galaxy in mere hours. Commander Shepard is a soldier in the Systems Alliance who finds themselves becoming the savior of the galaxy as a ancient machine race returns to wipe out all life in the galaxy. Players can carry over saves from each game to allow consequences of their actions to affect the way the story unfolds.
    • The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Video Game; avaliable on everything short of household appliances (although fuck knows what Todd Howard will think of next)): You are the Dragonborn, a being with the ability to intuitively speak the language of the Dovah (dragons), and to absorb their souls after they die. Dragons are returning to the continent of Tamriel, and you must stop them. While also exploring one of the most beautiful open worlds of all gaming history. Oh, and experiencing the wealth of content avaliable. Welcome to Bethesda’s greatest achievement; a game they have ported to every concievable platform that they could fit it on. Welcome...to Skyrim. Oh, and don’t kill the chicken
    • Frontlines, by Marko Kloos (book series; avaliable from multiple sources): A military science fiction series that is very obviously a spiritual successor to Starship Troopers (the novel, not the movie). Can’t say much else, that’s basically it.

  • My recommendation is anything without commercials. I'm watching what ever to get my mind off the virus, but that is hard to do when every other ad is a Thank you or in this together one.

I am a caffeine heathen; I prefer the waters of the mountain over the juice of the bean. Keep the Dews coming and no one will be hurt.

  • I've been working from home for a decade, so for me this is all just business as usual. But for those with a bunch of time on your hands, my recommendation is to use it to practice skills you've neglected or to learn something new. Grab a free game engine like Godot, Unity, or Unreal, and learn how to make games. Crack open a word processor and write a book. Practice drawing or painting in Krita. Download Blender and learn how to do 3D modeling. Grab a music sequencer like LMMS and learn how to compose. Instead of moping around, come out the other side of this thing 20% cooler.

But if you need something to occupy you while you're taking a break from that, I finally got around to watching Steven Universe earlier this year and it turns out it's really fucking good (don't let the first episode fool you, the show is not stupid). If you've been holding off on reading Ward (sequel to Worm by Wildbow) until it's finished, it's currently in the epilogues so now's a great time to start. On the video games front, I recommend Cross Code if you want an excellent action/adventure/puzzle game (think high-speed Legend of Zelda but in a sci-fi fake-MMO setting), and I extremely recommend Kerbal Space Program if you're at all a fan of space, engineering, or explosions.

I am the kernel that pops in the night. I am the pain that keeps your dentist employed.

  • Believe it or not, I've been watching The Vampire Diaries on Netflix. They also have its two spin offs on there as well, The Originals and Legacies. If you like trashy, teen vampire drama, they're ok.
