So, AdSense has now released a responsive sized ad option. I've put these in on the sidebars instead of using the old 160x600 option. For those people with larger screens, these should still view as 160x600... but those of you with smaller screens may now find that these scale down for you and no longer cause usage issues. Please let me know if it helps. Hopefully, it will help with ad traffic revenue... now that we're actually paying for our server usage, I have to watch those numbers a little more carefully.

In portrait mode I am not getting either side ad on my tablet. They appear in landscape.

I got one, although it takes a while to show up. It's much smaller and more convenient now!

Well, page views and use of high end mobile are both up this week... so I'm guessing that this change is working out for people who are inclined to visit with a mobile? On the downside, the responsive ads aren't getting as high revenue... whether that's because more people are viewing smaller ads or if fewer people are investigating ads, I can't tell yet. A week's worth of statistics is fairly limited.

I still have yet to even see an ad.
for some reason they just are not displaying at all, not even an indication that they should be there.

Dawn, do you have any sort of content-blocking software? Adblock, NoScript, this sort of thing? Maybe a block at the DNS level?
Don't call me "Shirley." You will surely make me surly.

I completely disabled adblock plus for this entire site, noscript would break the forums / commenting on all sites so I wouldn't install it. ( if it doesn't break them, it is not blocking scripts like it is supposed to, commenting, forum posting, heck even search results on google all require javascript running, noscript should be stopping those scripts. )
and no, I doubt my ISP is blocking google.

Disabling Adblock for 'this site' is unlikely to turn on ads that we've got running from Google because all that usually means is that is allows things from that site's domain to run flash/scripting. The Adsense ads are loading and running from entirely offsite locations. My bet is that unless you completely disabled Adblock, they won't load.

I had enabled adblocking or something of that nature inside Firefox's config but for the life of me I can't remember how to re-enable it. Of course when I opened Explorer I saw three ads: One for setting up a dating service to date see free Lama's, another to find hair gel to complement my receding hairline and lengthen my comb overs. And another to help bail out the U.S. economy in a lingering recession by helping unwanted ladies of the night.
But I promise to open up Explorer every so often as I search for cute little kittens hang off of melting icicles over gaping jaws of fervent mice, with machetes.
Edit: Although I have been getting E-mail from some dude connected to SRU promising to hook me up with a cute trinket. The only description he gave me was that he was part of a fantasy movement as he wore an old robe (looked like a dingy bathrobe) as well as having an unkempt beard that looked like it held robins eggs (broken shells really) and spoke with an broken English accent. Mayhaps it might have been his dentures falling out?
Anyway he told me to meet him at the mall or was it down the hall. His English wasn't very clear.

It's entirely possible that you'll run into the wizard around here... I'm pretty sure I validated Mr. Zink's email for his registration not long ago...

On my tablet, in landscape mode I get three ads, one left, one right and one bottom. In portrait mode I only see the one on the bottom. I am not running an adblocker.

More than likely, in portrait mode; you have so few pixels in width that the new ads on left/right won't load at all. Which is good for people trying to avoid ads... not so good for the site's ad revenue and paying for itself.

I usually use it in landscape mode, because otherwise all the tabs at the top get collapsed and navigation becomes a pain.

Just checked on my mobile phone, and the adds are there, they just swap from being verticals adds, to being horizontal adds, surprisingly, there was a 'mobile' version of the site layout, I never seen it before as on my tablet in landscape mode there is always enough width to display the normal PC version of the site (and the adds are being much nicer to the content since the tweak)

that might be it Krysten, since a browser with no adblock installed does display them.
