  • I come to you, oh Ascended Writers, begging for your assistance.
I am currently researching for a speech I am writing. In order to reduce confusion, I am going to give a little background to my predicament.
The speech I am writing is a persuasive speech on the idea of "Superpowers are a bad idea". I must have an argument using Logos, Pathos, and Ethos. I am asking your help, oh mighty ones, in the department of Logos.
I have decided for the Logos faction that I shall narrow it down to the economical impact oneself, a small group, and the possibility of a large majority to gain superpowers overnight.
Now for the actual question; What is the best process of finding, utilizing, and understanding data on the idea of how having superpowers would affect one's, a small group's, and a large majority's financial status.
    Thank you, and Praise Kellith.

  • Well, I'll take a stab at this. The problem with what you're asking is, that you're asking for data. That's assuming that such data exists somewhere.

Aside from thought, and science fiction, there is no data on an event like what you're asking about because it hasn't happened... so your best chance at data is to simply think about it, or perhaps ask people in a forum what they think the ramifications would be and why.

I could be misunderstanding what you mean by 'data' though. Feel free to correct me if I am.

  • The biggest issue with what you're asking is a matter of the powers involved... different powers will be able to generate revenue in a large number of ways each with differing returns. Each, When you compound that by creating any number of individuals who have various types of powers and it scales immensely.

Here's an example that was put into the Grrl Power comic of just one super powered individual and just one example of a use of his powers. http://grrlpowercomic.com/archives/1904

When you start to consider things like that you run into the fact that a person with powers has the revenue earning potential of anywhere from the same an individual person without powers has all the way up to as much as a multinational corporation or more. Each. Then you add in multiple individuals who can interact to create more revenue earning options.

  • You're obviously not going to find data on the effects of superpowered individuals on the economy, but you can find historical data about interactions between groups of widely differing economic power levels. The best example would probably be the Columbian Exchange. If you consider guns, germs, and steel to be superpowers, then you have an example of a few superpowered individuals devastating civilization across a continent.

That's the most famous example, but I'm sure you can find more if you use a flexible definition of "superpower".

  • You are close enough to my meaning of data that it's not important. I did take into consideration that there is no definitive numbers that I can give, so I am going to start the number crunching soon.
You may have not solved my full issue, but you have helped me find the right questions to ask.
    Thanks so much, Nagrij.

  • Thank you so much, Lupus. I think that that example is going to be my best chance for finding similarities.
I will take this into definite consideration.
    Thanks again.

  • As for the powers involved I was thinking along the lines of something easily concealable, such as abnormal strength, speed, or advanced intelligence. Flight, elemental manifestation, and other less concealable powers I am trying to avoid due to the likelihood of governmental intervention and other such factors.
I agree on the idea of compounding effects. If enough are able to gather together this will have an extreme change on the possibilities.
Thanks so much for the help, Dan. I'll be thinking on this for a bit.

  • Some of the best hard core looks at how fictional worlds would 'really work' as opposed to just what's seen on camera have been done by the folks over at "Law and the Multiverse"... (lawandthemultiverse.com). However, they aren't alone in applying real world understanding of complex fields to the things that go on in comics. One in particular that you might want to look into is EcoComics (eco-comics.blogspot.com) which is focused on economics... the specific field you're focused on.
