  • If anyone's been wondering why I've been quiet and/or frazzled lately, I've been busy designing (and composing) sound for our end of season production "Hound of the Baskervilles"... in addition to still working my engineering/operator side of the job in a busy schedule. What that means in a real sense is that I've been working 80-90 hrs a week since Feb without days off... for 40 hrs a week compensation.

The play is finally open (last weekend) and the results are fairly good. Two reviews so far:

    www.newsreview.com/sacramento/review-the...content?oid=20746066

    www.davisenterprise.com/arts/plenty-of-b...of-the-baskervilles/

    Evidently, I bring the creepy.

    :)

If you're in or near Sac-town and want to see the show, let me know. I never use my comps (my family is all out on the east coast and my friends are either online or already work in the biz and don't need me to get them comps).

  • Hahaha

I literally just wrote a scene with Abby reading Hound of the Baskervilles yesterday.

    Glad you are doing well.

My dreams take me to far off lands and times of distant past and future. They tell what has been done, what will happen and who I am. They show me things beyond the machinations of any man. Tell me, what are dreams to you?

  • Well that explains the short snippets we received. You were to busy running from the hounds to get to the keyboard.

Glad that the reviews are good. Hope you get a days rests. Its hard I'm sure with them nipping at your heels.

  • Well both those reviews are suitably complimentary Kristin, well done to you and the company. However I do have one question... Are the players professionals or amateurs? The comment that some of the voices did not project very well made me wonder if this is an amateur company.

Sadly a round trip from the UK just to watch your play is somewhat out of my budget.

  • I also designed sound for Re:ACT's world premiere production of "The Bunner Sisters" in San Fran in February:

Re:ACT is a small offshoot company made up of ACT (American Conservatory Theatre) program alum... they produced this piece in ACT's costume shop.

Professional... but we're a smallish professional/regional company. We only have 2-3 union contracts in a show this size... 4-5 in a large musical. But ya, sadly for those actors, they probably won't be working with us again. You can't expect miracles from the semi-professionals ... I think, technically, the interns are getting compensated more than they are... but not being able to project enough to fill the room is sort of a cardinal sin for an actor.

  • With the limited scope of my son's school I'm finding that many are now becoming reliant on hidden mic's to help project their voices. There are very few from the ones that are around my area that wish to emphasis the sounds of their voices.

If I could I would actually embark on seeing the performances as my son is in college for acting. Not just in costumes but other forms such as puppetry and so forth.

  • Ya. some uses of wireless mics make it easy to think that... but the truth is, wireless mics won't help if you can't project. Try putting someone who doesn't project in a wireless mic and stand them next to someone with a strong voice. You won't actually be able to push the gain high enough of the weak voice without getting ring/feedback from the strong voice being picked up by it.

  • I remember doing musicals in high school and one girl who could be heard clearly outside the building.
