  • Working on a few things today... installed a shinier version of the tag cloud in the lower left. Try giving it a whirl... no, really, drag your mouse across there and make it whirl. I think its a keeper. Now we just need to properly tag everything so its reeeeally useful.

Also cleaned out some old extensions that I had tested but couldn't get to perform the way I wanted to use them... not surprisingly, once they were gone, some other things that we had lost that I DID like, came back. So that was a win too.

The next thing on that list is a much larger project and I'll probably wait until Thursday next week to work on it to avoid causing 'down time' during the busy parts of the week. THAT is a rework of the access level structure for the site so that we can implement some blogging and 'open' fan ficcing without making fan fic authors continue to work in the forums... unless they want to.

In the meantime, I'm going to try to get the rest of the universe stuff together... the power trait descriptions for instance. And do some writing. There's a Jimmy and Tavi story in the pipeline soon (core story 1-4), so as soon as the Nagrij/Elrod novel of 1-3 is done... :)

  • /sigh.

Not wanting to be a complainer, but the new spinning tag cloud covers content when used on my IPad. It protrudes into the middle panel.

    Sorry.

  • Well frack... it has % options for the margins/padding, but the base cloud is purely pixel settings. That f'ing sucks.

Oh for the days when you just put "Best viewed on monitors set to 800x600 resolution" and that was just peachy.

  • The tag cloud was indeed pretty, I'll give you that.

So probably about two months until we see 1-4, maybe three - assuming alternating weeks on generations? Looking forward to more cute Tavi VI, and more insight into what makes Jimmy tick.

Seriously, thank you for your time and effort. It is appreciated.

  • Would whatever you did affect the size of the login text boxes. Because mine now extend super far, atleast they are long enough to fit my password now.

  • Ya, made sure the login box is responsive too. Trying to make sure everything works 100% for mobile as well as desktop. With any luck, I'll be able to recode the tag cloud to work with responsive settings. Since it is a small module that I can probably avoid updating, I might be able to slip in some code fixes without it having long term issues. We'll see.

  • The login boxes also extend out on my computer. I thought it would just be on mobile.

I'm having this issue as well. Not a major thing by any stretch, but it does look odd.

And it sounds like I completely missed whatever this whirling tag cloud was...

  • We all seem to have a thing about not getting a swirly. I suggest going to the bathroom and commence in giving one themselves or if possible consult having a partner, spouse or loved one help. :-p

On having the bar to large, I would consider if it was to small. As many have said. Size does matter.

  • Ok... are you saying that the login/password bars are extending out and they look strange... or are you saying that the login/password bars are extending out BEYOND their well or the sidebar? Because the first is simply a perception issue and you'll get used to it. The second is an actual problem that I need to fix.

  • Okay. For me when I log in on my computer, the desktop monitor has both user name and password bars extend into the actual text for the forum.

Once you log in it vanishes of course to where its legible.

Edit: About 35 viewable characters worth.

  • I use firefox screen rez 1920 x 1080 (default) for me.

The bars are the default size for logging in if on home or forum which I have it defaulted to so its been put at a fixed length.

    Edit: Its fixed now.

  • This is more something to be aware of, rather than something that I am looking for a fix for. More to the point, I suspect it is intentional and I'm not asking for that intent to be changed.

One of the devices I use to visit the site is a Kindle Fire of some description. When I view a forum thread in landscape mode, the page renders more or less as expected. However, when I rotate the device and view it in portrait mode, the pages look a bit screwy. In particular, the date stamp and post number vanish. Without digging into the CSS, I suspect this is because the print oriented stylesheet strips out the avatar portrait, and I believe the date stamp and post number are part of the same style element.

The only reason I look for these elements is when I browse the forums on my kindle, I am usually logged out, so I have to rely on them to find my place on where to pick up my reading. As the workaround is to rotate my device, I don't think it's worth spending time on making changes.

  • I'm really not clear on what you're saying is happening here and why it causes you problems. If you are referring to your own avatar, it should make sense that you don't see that if you aren't logged in... right? As to time/date...where are you seeing these things at all? Do you mean on the category list of stories - unvisited vs visited links? That would be purely a factor of your tablet's history, not something that the site controls.

  • The date stamp and post number are just above the post box on the right side.

None of that disappears on my tablet when I rotate it.

The only odd thing I get is that the ads don't always appear.

  • If you have too small a display, the sidebars no longer render on the sides. They move completely such that you get the top menu and search, then all the left sidebar content vertically above the center section, and then below the center section, you get the right sidebar, then the footer. At that point, most of the ads will either be square blocks that take up about 1/3 of your device screen or they will be a small banner ad running the full width of your screen.

  • The elements I was referencing are wrapped in a <small class="text-muted pull-right hidden-phone"> tag, which indicates that they are indeed being hidden as intended. When the kindle is in portrait mode, the screen is rather narrow. I noted that the tag cloud appeared at the top of the page, so this does appear to be the intended behavior.
